Hi im currently wfh. I rang in sick to my work today.Ive been struggling with anxiety and depression for a couple of weeks. I take meds for it. I feel so guilty for ringing in sick but know that I needed a break.
My manager said to me - what happened to make me feel like this. I dont know but they made me feel like i should have definitive reason. They said if you take your meds this morning than youll be better to work in the afternoon but it doesnt work that way.
Im having a bad time with it and i feel like im being judged for it. I dont get why mental health in the workplace is misunderstood. In the past when i said i have a virus its been such an easier conversation. Am i the only one who feels like this.

I think it depends on which workplace, at my previous job they was always acceptable to people calling in sick for either being burned out to depression etc.

Because it was a common thing at that place with people becoming burned out. So the bosses understood but not all workplaces will have an understanding for mental health. Some don’t even believe in mental health and just think it’s a hoax. So it will all come down to how people understand mental health.

Sometimes it feel like they would need to walk in our shoes to fully understand how it is. A bit like the idiom: Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. I think people would have a better understanding.

Like Talina said, it depends on the people there. It's widely misunderstood by people everywhere, so I guess those who have co-workers and employers who do understand, are fortunate.

Hello Ajasmine. Welcome to the forum. I am very sorry to see you have hurt yourself. It sounds like your manager may have been trying to understand what you are going through. For some people there is a trigger for their depression or anxiety. I can understand how this made you feel uncomfortable as you did not have a trigger. It can feel really hard not to have people who understand. You have come to the right place as we will understand how you feel.
