When I first got put into the ESA (Employment Support Allowance) work related activity group last year, I did a quick search online to see if anyone with agoraphobia or social anxiety had managed to get into the support group instead. I was disappointed to see so many posts of people unsure how they would cope with work related activity, but no one posting they were in the support group. I decided to appeal the decision anyway. Today I won.

I joined up here to let people in the same situation know not to give up hope. Quote Schedule 3 of ESA Regulations 2008, Descriptor 13 Coping with Social Engagement. As long as you can prove that socialising is always upsetting for you, that is enough. I had to answer a few tricky questions from the doctor about how my social anxiety affected me, but it was just him checking it was genuine social anxiety & not someone pretending. I did not have to provide additional evidence, my testimony was enough.

Hope this helps someone.

Could I ask if you have had any therapy for your SA? I am currently having cbt and I donno if that will affect it. And do you have depression or did you get it purely on your social anxiety? Sorry for all the questions.

I don't mind you asking questions. I do also have depression & my social anxiety is so severe I have had agoraphobia for around a decade now. I have received some bits of CBT, am awaiting another round it. Think the reason CBT has not been all that successful for me is the length of time I've had my problems for. Having said all that, Descriptor 13 (Coping with Social Engagement) should not require depression too. It is simply about whether or not the person can cope with social situations. If it always causes them upset, then it is grounds for them to be placed into the ESA support group.

Good luck!

The tribunal judge said the longest she could recommend was 2 years before my next assessment. Someone has told me they believe that means 2 years from my last assessment, but they are unsure haven't provided any evidence to back that up. I hope it's 2 years from now, because it is nearly a year since my last medical - they dragged out the appeal process over nearly a year.

I agree that both Labour & Conservatives may be cause for concern. It was under Labour I had my first ever WCA through Atos & that was even more horrendous than this time round. Part of that might be due to my naivete that as long as I was honest, they would report back honestly though. At least this time I knew to get it all recorded & that you can request a home visit etc.
