The problem is whether or not someone can stop drinking can still make them an alcoholic
Absolutely... And also
common signs of alcoholism can include ...being unable to control your alcohol consumption and craving it when you are not drinking. Putting alcohol before your personal responsibilities and feeling the need to drink more (which I mentioned before).

Also a behavioural change when drinking and spending all your money on booze.

I don't like labels though. I prefer to say I have a problem with alcohol.

And this is only my opinion.

i've had a drink i'll defend myself one friend said his girlfriend had to have half a bottle of whisky in the morning before her eyes could focus and thats alcoholism, one women said if you have to have a drink when you wake up you know you have a problem

i'd say i'm not that bad, i said to one psychiatrist i don't get on the bus stinking of alcohol he said so far another said don't compare yourself to other people

At the moment it's not so much comparing yourself to other people, it's how you feel, but needs to explained further.

it's how you feel well a lot of people with mental illness will tell you they don't feel ill, comparing or saying alcoholism is a mental illness

sometimes i like the idea of prohibition, it'd be easier to avoid alcohol if certain people with what i call severe alcohol problems weren't stressing me up in the area, but prohibition didn't work

I understand how people with an alcohol problem can stress you out, imagine yourself in a room with 15 people who are all alcoholics and a small bottle is 'passed' around with alcohol, there is sure to be one person who consumes the whole bottle, not caring about what anyone else thinks, alcoholic people only care about themselves

Agree with you and yes some undiagnosed people suffering from mental illness use alcohol and/or dope to be able to socialise, even function, doesn't it remind you of when someone woke up, the first thing they needed was a smoke (cig).
We all have our own ways of being able to cope in life but when addiction is involved it changes everything and alters our life.
The first thing someone does is reach for their addiction and if they don't have it, then any excuse is made to obtain it, no matter what it is.

i find moralising about alcohol questionable when theres an elephant in the room
