I was thinking how we do so much effort to improve our conscious state and if we die whilst conscious I have no worries. But what if we die while asleep and lost in a dream world ?? That bothers me a bit.

I lucid dream almost every night and have died many times in my dreams.

It is not like the Matrix where if you die in the Matrix, your body dies too.

Hi NeedHaldol. I was introduced to this worry by Tibetan monks. They said you should do a certain practice to be aware in our dreams, so when we die in our sleep we will go to the right place and not get lost. We didn't have any trouble getting born, but there is all this emphasis on dying well. Other traditions have told me to meditate constantly because I won't go to the right place if I am attached/distracted to/by this world. I am having a hard enough time just taking care of myself.

I suspect that dying will trigger waking up and becoming conscious... although it is said we should meditate more in order to learn to be more conscious in the states after death.

All you can do is try to reach a state of peace and non-attachment in this life, meditate and develop concentration, and see how close you can come to enlightenment. Beyond that, there is no use in worrying. In fact, worry itself is a good avenue to practice non-attachment because it shows you have attached strongly to something that is causing you to disturb your mind. Introspection in order to find out what exactly it is is a useful thing to do...

Dreams are so fascinating once you really get into psychoanalysis. They do not indicate that you are going to die. Instead, they indicate that something in your life is changing - an old part is dying, or a new beginning is happening. :)
