What first triggered your psychosis?

I was asked this on another thread and it's really got me thinking. What was the trigger for your psychosis?

I've read some really interesting threads on here about antibiotics and other prescriptions triggering psychosis and lots where there's not really mention of what caused it.

For me, I don't know! I wish I did! There wasn't an obvious trigger but it doesn't run in my family so I don't know where it's come from. I've been through a lot of stress but there was nothing particularly stressful that triggered my last episode so I'm stumped. Bit of a boring story to start with, sorry!

What caused or causes your psychosis?

Hey, my boyfriend suffers badly from this, but it’s usually caused from drug abuse:( (with him anyway) although he’s had some bad things happen in his life in the past, which I notice comes out when he’s having an episode, it’s almost like a PTSD disorder that comes real, and he starts thinking it’s happening all over again

My pshycosis, and also separately issues of mental he alth illness were brewing up from dormant from birth literally. What actually caused the pshycosis episode to occur, that, I don't know, i also feel I wish I did know on the other hand, I get too anxious, so I'm better off, not knowing.

Best regards.

Don’t know what brought mine on but it could have been brought on by trying acid once and having a really bad trip. I never touched it again

My son’s episode was started by a mix of acid with marijuana and some alcohol (all at once) and this got him into a bad trip where he became really paranoid instantly and then he couldn’t sleep for quite some days (7-8) and it went crazy up to the point where he thought we the parents were going to kill him. The problem is that this was supposed be a clear psychosis episode started by drugs, but it seems there was something dormant and this was the last drop. So he could face a chronic issue.

Things had been brewing since childhood but became psychotic after my mum died. She was disabled and I looked after her, I've always thought that my psychosis waited for her to die before becoming apparent.

For me it could at a very long shot have been caused by my mum contracting German measals when I was still in the womb.
More realistically though I blame a combination of stress and bad choices made by me during my early years. Add in a splash of something really bad and a dash of bad genes and hay ho here we go.
I dont really think mental illness is specifically selective. Drugs, alcohol, abuse either mental physical or sexual or just bad luck or a bang on the head. Anything can be a trigger.

So interesting that you actually know you were exposed to a virus in the womb.

Really good post, I don't think they really understand too much about what causes psychosis if it isn't obvious.

I only know this because my mum told me so. It was late on in the pregnancy when she contracted German measles. I think I am lucky really as it is devastating for others

For me, the catalyst seems to have always been Ganja. It's been the source of all my problems & I find myself going back to it time & time again :-(

My first psychotic break was when I was robbed and severely injured. I went way off the deep end. I had to protect my home so I had all kinds of weapons around my house. Today, I sometimes have a relapse and try to find my firearms but my family took them all away from me. I still get nuts and want weapons to protect me. I do have four dogs so this helps ease my paranoia. I was such a nut case carrying around guns and swords. My neighbors will not talk to me as I though they were the enemy and I did some crazy things. Gosh what a sicko I was and still could be if triggered. God help us all with are mental health and well being. Love and hugs Jules
