What does it feel like to hear voices?

Hey all,

My apologies for my blatant misunderstanding, but that's why I am posting here.

So this is an ignorant question. How do you actually hear voices? Do they appear out loud? Are they thoughts? What do they say?

Don't mean to intentionally cause anyone distress by asking, but I am curious because my only idea is the portrayal in films or on TV.

Thank you so much for your time.

Everybody hears voices differently. Some are very loud and clear and can be quite frightening sometimes shouting other times criticising. But my voices are quite harmless they tend to sound like a radio on in another room, Slightly muffled but constant and I’ve learned to ignore them. When I’m going thru a bad phase they are very critical and much louder. Sometimes shouting my name at me. So they are very distressing because I’m not sure if it’s people that are saying these things or if it’s my voices.

Mine can also be medium to loud voice volumne, muffled and jumbled not too clear, it is always always best policy to ignore off the voices. I never tend to evualate my voices, and I could then be in a worse off state, and I am on med, also, I will simply put on music, and within a couple of hours the voices have disappeared completely.

My voices are both whispering voices and loud voices. I can't hear what the whispering voices say but I know they are talking about me. The voices I can hear call my name and constantly remind me of events in the past. They also make me paranoid telling me my house is bugged, people can see me through the computer etc. And they also tell me I need to harm myself. Medication tends to make the voices quieter but I still hear them.

Thank you all so much for answering the question. Really appreciate it.

So I understand some thoughts are not auditory, therefore only inside your head. How do you determine what is your thoughts, even of unsatisfactory, or intrusive thoughts for a lack of a better phrase and what is actual hearing voices?

Sounds dumb I know, just trying to further my understanding.

I just hear the one voice but he used to pretend to be multiple people by using different tones and accents. I hear him in my mind like you would a thought but it sounds separate from my way of thinking like there is two of us sharing this brain.

I used to hear him in my ears like someone was in the room with me, I used to hear him in the sound of vibrations coming from electrical equipment like fans, washing machines on spin, tumble dryers and the fans inside my PC. Imagine someone stood behind a fan and talking into it and that's what it sounded like, some call it electronic voice phenomenon (EVP).

I used to hear him in the sound I made from chewing food, the sound of my footsteps even more so on gravel, basically any vibrations he could manipulate to create words, even the beating of my heart, I would hear and feel a word in each beat and he later learned he could effect the timing of the beats to match what he was saying so my heart was going crazy, fast one second then slow another giving me high and low blood pressure and even when sitting down I would feel very ill and dizzy and standing up was impossible this is how I know he's a real part of me and has a connection to my autonomic nervous system.

Thankfully medication takes most of his ways of communicating away from him, all he can do is talk in my mind now and he's 95% quieter on medication so I'll probably never come off of it to protect myself from his insane ways of talking to me.

As for what he says I could write double what I've written already and then some on what he says. Mostly he just begs me to talk to him as I've not said a word to him for nearly 3 years now and begs to come off medication as he wants his abilities back, they're capable of much more than talking but I won't go into that unless you request that information then I'd be happy to tell you some of the fantastic and sometimes terrible things they can do.

Without medication you won't know what are your own thoughts and what are the thoughts of the voice you hear as they can use our 'channel' to make us think we're the one doing the thinking but in reality most of the thoughts you have are coming from the voice you share a body with as we all have one. The only way you can tell is if you have thoughts or ideas which are not in line with your personality or intrusive thoughts as they call them or get medication and your voice won't be able to hide themselves as your own thoughts any more and it forces them to speak as themselves which as I said in my previous post sounds different and separate from your own.

For me the difference is obvious between the voices and my thoughts. My thoughts have no volume to them. I think them silently. I don't hear them. But the voices I can actually hear out loud with my ears but they are coming from inside my head. The closest thing I can compare it to is if you listen to something through headphones. It sounds out loud from inside your head and it is obvious it is not your thoughts. Sometimes it sounds like the voice is coming from just behind my head or the back part of my scull too.

One of the toughest things to deal with is sharing the experience as nobody else can hear it

Mine are real space ghosts that own the earth who are killing our spirits off after death so they don't get done by the real spirit ghost lead universal government from outer space for illegally making bodies out of spirit mist and visions. Two are in my head just like you talk to yourself in your mind and the other talks through my voice box because he was the the first one in. The female space ghost that owns the earth who crushes human ghost embryos to death up in the ozone or spirit keeps passing through my head as to kill my spirit I go a blur, I probably won't last long, it's horrible I don't want to die.

Mine used to sound as if they were in another room or outside my dorm. They would simply narrate my day at first until I started communicating with them, which they then turned vicious and manipulative. Mine are able to put words into other people’s mouths and cause astonishing hallucinations especially when under distress. Nowadays however they’re just voices in my head that keep me company. Mostly nagging. They become louder if my surroudings become louder, don’t know how that works. For example, at work when using a powertool, they yell just as loud as the powertool. They’re not insanely distinct anymore though, like I can now make them quiet down by not thinking about them.

the thing is you cant its a conflicting view in psychiatry some believe we all have voices we just have to live with them but other psychiatrists believe that voices are external something you cant control if you can understand that one side believes its internal that we can control/harness in life to improve the other belief of an external force the person cannot control which leads them to suggest antipsychotics it really comes down to the individual person i believe i watched a documentary about this exact topic i will find it then link it if you are interested
