Welfare Reforms In Breach Of ‘Legal Obligations’ To Protect Disabled People, Finds Landmark Report

Welfare Reforms In Breach Of 'Legal Obligations' To Protect Disabled People, Finds Landmark Report

A report published today by Just Fair finds that the UK government is in breach of its legal obligations to respect, protect and fulfil the human rights of disabled people.

The report is the first comprehensive analysis of the extent to which the UK government is meeting its international obligations to realise the rights of disabled people in the austerity era. It examines the rights to independent living, work, social security, social protection and an adequate standard of living.

Combining legal analysis with testimony-based evidence, the report concludes that government policies are compromising disabled people’s enjoyment of these fundamental rights, causing significant hardship.

I was reading in the newspaper this weekend, that some sort of roving European inspector has criticized Ian Duncan Smith. He was furious about it. I can't remember her name, but I think it's the same woman who has asked to visit asylum seekers detained in the UK, but been denied access.

Under European and UN Law, she is supposed to be able to do this :)

IDS anger as former Marxist Raquel Rolnik attacks his benefit cuts | Mail Online

Could this be who you mean - Raquel Rolnik, a Brazilian housing rapporteur and member of a group of United Nations poverty ambassadors.

(I apologise for the vile, vitriolic and borderline misogynistic tone of the DM article, but it was the first one that came to hand. I'll try and find a better link soon).

EDIT: As promised, here's a link to a more reasonable article, which also comes with a little bit of insight into IDS's character and seeming inability to handle any type of criticism.

IDS reacts “furiously” to anything that criticises him. | glynismillward189

'they think they can force you to care David'

'You people matter about this much'

'And if they took you all out tomorrow and set fire to you all'

'And most people are so dumb, they still think their votes for any of us count and that maybe the next party will be better'

Nice one, mate. That's the woman I was talking about. I was racking my brain about it last night, and I remembered she was a Brazilian, but her name completely evaded me :)
