:welcome:
The aims of the Forum for the people of Islington are, firstly, to promote awareness of good mental health practice, by acknowledging the importance of mental health for everyone’s wellbeing and happiness.
Secondly, the forum seeks to improve the care of people suffering from mental illness whether they are being treated in the community or in hospital.
Thirdly, we aim to reduce the stigma attached to mental ill health, which is demoralising in itself and often prevents people with a problem seeking help.

Hi imdoingthebestican,

Just thought this would be of interest to. Believe me, i have tried my upmost to get a mental health forum going i Islington. Unfortunately it did not work.

Islington-Mental Health Voluntary Work Link Exchange.

"Maria's a bit of voluntary"

Link exchage http://breakout.890m.com/ New free web host

If you are seeking voluntary work, take a look. There are some very interesting sites on the exchange, looking for volunteers and waiting for you to contact them. You can view links, post links, give up to date info to share. We support volunteer opportunities for all in the GLBT Community.

If you are an organistion you can post your link, or if you know of an opportunity you can post as well. By doing so, you are providing an opportunity for someone to become active. This will be a postive benefit to that someone.

No links will become active until they are checked.
Comments, suggestions, welcome.

Regards,
Eng65

Hi, just introducing myself

I would just like to say hi to everyone on the forum and introduce myself.

I live in Tower Hamlets and work at Tower Hamlets College.

I found out about this from looking online but also I was re-joining forums after getting a new laptop.

I work on a programme for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities called Aspirations.

I am interested in learning difficulties, mental health and challenging behaviour.

I am completing a masters in Learning Difficulties and Challenging Behaviour as a distance learning student at University of Birmingham.

I have done a lot of research into mental health and learning difficulties and would like to share my knowledge and experience, but also find out about what others are doing in this field.

Hopefully, we can all spread the word and get others to join the forum.

Hello there

I am support worker based in Islington and I have just found this site. Looks like there's not been much recent activity here in the Islington part of the forum!

Very useful that "Maria's Links" site I stumbled across through the signature of Eng65.

I am glad someone has commented about the link site. There is another site to share info, you can even upload files to share...

The site is here

I have not been on the site for sometime. Unfortunately, i relapsed after seven years sobriety. At the moment i am trying to get it together again. I went back into detox and then back into rehab. I was in a bad way, nearly met our maker. Nothing set in stone in this life. Anyway one day i will share about what hppened. I am getting help with MH Services as well.

All the best,
Eng65

Under-occupying Islington tenant

Welfare reforms and Housing Benefit.

This morning I recieved a call from Islington Council informing me I was underoccupying my flat and demanding to inpsect my home. I was half asleep at the time and was both shaken and disturbed by the call coming out of the blue like that. This is not the way any local authority should engage with mental health service users. Be prepared for your call...

I spent the day as a nervous wreck looking for support and information on the issue. I feel this will be the final turn of the screw that will make me snap!

I hate this government, I really do. I sincerely hope the Tories loose the next election, and the Lib Dems suffer in the same way. Comments in the media by the public are vile and nasty and these politicians live up to every word of it....

My housing, my mental health care, my son who works and is trying to do the right thing and go to university this year becasue wages are shit and no guarantee of a decent job.

With a lot of evidence, pressure and support I applied to Islington Council 3 times on the grounds of my mental health, being underoccupied and when my son left home. All before these welfare reforms came in. They are screwing me in every direction I turn, the stress is overwhelming.

I was at a point at which I felt I could really make a go of living a relatively stable life. It has taken me years of hospitalisation, and support to get to this place and can now see it all falling apart. I now have to drop everything I had set up for me to make progress and deal with this with my life being turned upside down again. I feel defeated.
