Hii,

So basically last September or August I was constantly having bad panic attacks, really extreme so I ended up being prescribed 5mg of valium when needed. Instead of taking one when I'm at the brink of having a panic attack, I'd take one at the first sign of one coming so pretty much I've been taking 5mg most days since late August/September.

My anxiety has slightly gotten better and the idea of being addicted to a benzo doesn't sound appealing so I've stopped taking them. Have a few questions:

How long will I have the full drug in my system? I know there are a lot of factors, I'm male quite skinny and slightly tall.

How extreme will my withdrawals be? I read that people can have seizures etc and that scares the heck out of me.

Do I need to 'taper off' or can I just stay cold turkey. I understand that 5mg of valium is quite a low dose, but not wanting to take any chances

Final question, will tolerance go back down for when those desperate situations where I seriously need a valium.

thanks for reading, know it was a lot:)

Hi SickofThis. It's always a good idea to taper down slowly from any drug. Going cold turkey is not useful as you will have withdrawal problems. Why torture yourself when you can quit gradually ?? I keep ativan on hand for emergencies only.

Don't suddenly stop if you have been taking them fairly regularly.
You need to taper them off.
A friend tried cold turkey and she had dreadful withdrawals.
Also the anxiety became almost intolerable.

This is only a personal story but I feel you should taper them gradually.
In the 90's a psychiatrist gave me a schedule of how to taper off.

I wish you well whatever you try. Keep safe. X

If things get really bad would it be possible for you to
take one every third night or whatever may suit you to lessen
the withdrawals.

Only an idea.
Let us know you are getting on if you feel up to it. x

Yeah the cold turkey idea lasted a whole 6 days lol. I'm thinking to myself whether or not I actually want to stop taking it, I still have anxiety, I don't see it ever going away. Going to start taking less each time I need them though x

I'm glad you are deciding your alternatives and what works for you best.
Were you getting the meds on repeat prescription?
If so, how many were you prescribed monthly,(weekly etc)

I had some as a muscle relaxant for severe back pain along with painkillers.
I had 25-to be taken as needed.
My gp has reduced them to 18.

She has advised a consultant I will be seeing to reduce them if possible.
I'm a bit annoyed as I am seeing the consultant privately.
To me it seems strange that nhs can make recommendations to the
private sector..

Sorry, I have diverted from your original post.

I hope you are managing to find a suitable answer that suits you
best.
Take care, x

PS. Ignore my rant about gp etc. x

Hi SickOfThis,
Just wondering how you are?

I hope you have found something that helps you.
I know how difficult it is to make decisions about medications.

It's not just the physical withdrawals that are difficult but also
the psychological aspects as you said, you are wondering whether
you really want to stop.

I found it difficult and confusing also.

If you want to, let us know how you are. x

Hey Polly, sorry for the late reply been really busy lately, moving out soon so have a lot to do.

I get 14 5mgs a month, they usually last me a month, most times a little bit more than a month. No real change in my anxiety, although I've been taking a xanax whenever im anxious over a valium x

Be very careful stopping benzos cold turkey. I have been told they can have lethal consequences from the withdrawals. I don't have any evidence to substantiate that but do be careful. Also be careful drinking with them. Not preaching or judging. Just want you to be safe.

Hey SickOfThis, you really do have a lot to contend with at the moment.
Have you moved yet or still in the process?

Are you glad to be moving out or have no choice?
I can imagine this is very stressful whichever way it is.

Have you made any definite decisions yet about the Valium.
I didn't know you also had xanax.
Are they more helpful than Valium?

I have a friend who is afraid of flying so takes Zanax beforehand.
They say they are "flying" even before they get on the plane!!

I've never taken this so don't know what it's like.

I do hope your move goes well, x

Hi, yeah you're right stopping cold turkey can be fatal, I've done some reading and I think safe in regards to any fatal withdrawal symptoms thankfully.

Hey, yeah starting university so moving into student accommodation, I'm hoping that with the life of being a student, my anxiety will subdue due to being so busy with course work etc.

I haven't had any valium in just under 10 days and I haven't been feeling too anxious either, when I have i've resorted to 1/4th of a xanax bar which has the strength of around 5mg of valium. I personally prefer it to valium due to it being more fast acting then valium and it also leaves the system within 8 hours.

Still not sure what I'm going to do in the long run, definitely not doing what I've been doing the past few months and taking them almost daily. I've given all my medication to my Mum who only gives me it when I'm in desperate need. avoids me taking them too often :D

hope all is well with you x
Thank you, hope ever

Hi sick of this, how are you doing?
Have you started uni yet. If so how are you doing.

Does your mum still have your tablets?
That seemed to be a really good idea.

I hope your anxiety is reducing and that you have
managed to work out your tablets.

Take care, polly x
