For the last 12 months I’ve known about BPD and it’s been the closest thing to understanding why I am how I am. Last time I attempted to medically find out what was wrong I was handed antidepressants. What steps do I take to fix myself without my doctor assuming I just have depression?

While we wait for other members with BPD (I'm just a voice hearer) to answer you I'm interested in hearing your story and what traits you have that make you believe you have BPD.

That's if you feel like sharing, but more information will help others relate to you and they'll be able to tell you what route they took to getting therapies like Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and so forth.

Are you aware of the mental health charity called MIND? They might be able to help you aswell.

I realise I just posted this in reply to the introductions page but more relevant for here...

I’ve never really discussed my symptoms out loud before. I guess what’s troubling me the most is the inconsistent and damaging behaviours and the results they bring. I’m currently jobless, friendless and afraid to open up to my family as I don’t think they would understand.

To be diagnosed with BPD, you must have 5 of the 9 symptoms. If you don't have those, you likely do not have it. Without more information, it's kind of hard to tell. But speaking with a therapist regularly, along with the doctor, will get whatever diagnoses required.

  • Fear of abandonment.
  • Unstable relationships.
  • Unclear or shifting self-image.
  • Impulsive, self-destructive behaviors.
  • Self-harm.
  • Extreme emotional swings.
  • Chronic feelings of emptiness.
  • Explosive anger.
  • Feeling suspicious or out of touch with reality.
