I've had depression for about two years now. I'm on medication and have done multiple treatments but it's persistent. I used to be suicidal and I'm not anymore, although I'm afraid of slipping back into that place like I've done a few times before. I've seen six therapists/psychiatrists and they all talk about building my "toolbox" for when I get down, but they've never actually given me any tools and I haven't been able to find anything on my own. I'm tired of friends and family telling me to talk to people or go for a walk. Anyone have something that helps them when they're in the depths of it? Short term or long term.

Brilliant suggestions lu.
caroco, I’m sick of people telling me to go for a walk,
join a gym, talk to someon, have bath etc.
Good ideas but almost impossible when you are in the depths of depression.
Good luck with whatever you choose x

you have talked about positive things you can do in the present and the future....but you could also look to the past......woooooooooooooo.....

remember good things that have happened.

reminisce about the good times.

holidays, sunshine, playing with toys as a child, rolling down hills, picnics, sunsets, beer

My toolbox has:
Open blinds - I keep them shut when depressed. Opening them can help lift me, but I really need to push myself to do it. Sometimes I cant and that's okay, as long as I try again the next day.

Pet the animals. Talk to someone. Do my hair and/or get dressed.

Try and remember what makes you feel good when you're not deep in depression and try and force yourself to do some of those things.

Sometimes when I'm so depressed, I look at my toolbox list and it's as though its locked and I cant get access to those tools. But after a few days I might be able to do one or two things that are on the list.

Maybe there is a certain person or object that makes you happy?
