This could have gone in the employment section but I though it might be better under a general category - I have heard that it is not what you know at work it is who you know and that they don't feel people being locked in.

This is true. Eight years ago, right after passing the board exam, I got my first job in a government office with the help of my grand mother. Left the institution (and I'm glad I did) after several months because I can't bear the politics at work. Eventually left the country and started my life on my own.

regarding the OP - agreed, who likes you, makes a huge difference, and how well you fit in, which is where i struggle as i tend to be different for many reasons
