The News, Newspapers and Anxiety

Do you avoid The News and Newspapers because it heightens your anxiety ?

I always want to know what's going on,.. but whenever I come away from the TV after watching the news or after reading a newspaper, my anxiety shoots through the roof !

Hi Sky

When im recovering from a bad depressed spell i cant watch any news or read any papers. i have gradually re introduced the news but still cant bear global warming stories. i had a huge massive fear of the world ending when i was in hospital and was sure i could see astaroids about to hit earth (?!?)

Snap!

hi guys can't believe just read that...such a relief to me that other people avoid news and newspapers.

I got so bad at one point that when my husband brings the paper in I just put it straight in bin.

Its amazing that people are different the cause of the problem may well be different but the effect can be the same.

views that are expressed in newspapers (always seems to be done very blatantly in articles now but of course some are worse than others) can make me feel down, angry, confused and isolated but I don't avoid them. I don't watch TV though, so don't come into contact with it on there.

Sometimes, yeah. If it's about medical threats such as swine flu or something, I have to turn it off because when I hear symptoms I assume I'm going to have them and think I'm going to die.:scared:

About all I do now is look at the BBC News Web Site once a week. I don't read papers, & I don't watch TV. We are told a load of crap anyway. Your better off, & will be better informed by not looking at any news.

Addition: I do think it is worth reading the news occasionally but if you take anything you read as complete truth, let alone everything, then you are likely to feel frightened. I understand though that with anxiety (seeing as I have a lot of it myself) that alone is not very helpful.

I try to live in the moment and make the best of what I have right now. I try to let my mood be governed by my experiences rather than my worries (I don't always succeed though!). Most of human misery is caused by regretting the past or fearing the future. Rarely about the moment we are in.

We stayed at a guest house run by some americans who were involved in architecture close to the twin towers. They were involved in introducing a book to the American news that their Government would have preferred them not to. Later that year someone high up in the American army came to stay as a guest, and questions were asked.

They only ever trust the BBC news now. Shows how influential the Govt can be in what is broadcast on the news.

However a couple of years after Princess Di died I met some Americans and they were convinced we Brits had been duped as a nation concerning her death. I don't know what to believe anymore. I am now not convinced all countries exist unless I have experienced them myself!

George Orwells 1984 is a good read. I read it once as a teenager but it has stuck with me all that time.
