The day before the hurricane hit, our tenant passed away in the hospital. It was all the more sad because my bf has thirty years in AA and offered to take him to a meeting, but R chose the bottle. I thought maybe we could have done more, but my bf says some people chose the bottle. My bf would have been the perfect sponsor for him. So it's very sad that he drank himself to death with vodka on the other side of our house where he had the privacy to do so.

A year ago he collapsed on my front door step and I thought he was drunk again but then realized it was a medical issue, so called the ambulance. The hospital doctors said he needed a triple bypass heart procedure right away but he had to stop drinking and smoking. He came home and kept drinking and smoking. In a year the circulation wasn't getting to his legs. His legs became painful and there were clots in his veins.

So Friday he drove himself to the ER and by Sunday he was dead.

My next tenant will not be a drinker or smoker. I can't bear to watch someone kill themselves slowly again. R was a little man with long hair and a beard and he just kept to himself. He had a steady job and was a functional alcoholic. I just keep thinking we should have done more to help him.

hey Poopy you are back good to see you here again. very sad about your tenant. we just never know people.. i had a neighbour who was a functioning alcoholic. i dont think you can really know if someone has drink issues really. i mean drinking can start off as a social thing ....it can start to escalate.

I keep walking quietly past his room as if he were still in there sleeping in the days for his night job. Then I realize he isn't there. He use to make sounds in there, loudly clearing his throat, coughing, flushing the toilet.

I went into his room to clear out his refrigerator where all his food had spoiled from the electric being out during the hurricane. There were empty vodka bottles everywhere.

His ex wife and daughter are coming to clear out his room. I guess they'll take his new flat screen tv. Funny, in the five years he was here, he never mentioned having been married nor having three kids.

Sounds like he had his mind set on which path he wanted to take. There is only so much you can do for a bird who doesn't want to fly. They've got to want to flap their wings and some birds just don't want to. :low:

thats really sad Poopy but he did have a roof over his head and a stable environment. two very important things when life has fallen apart. you were able to give him that.
