I have a dx of cyclothymia, when i got this dx i promptly stopped with the NHS and moved to a different country.

While i was on citalopram/celexa, i experienced some heavy mixed and a manic episode.

during my manic phase, i was hallucinating heavily, i had a divine experience. I was seeing energy everywhere. A 40ft column of bright yellow/gold energy with the loudest noise i have heard came rushing through the floor, i could see it going up for 30 miles. I knew it went to the centre of the universe, connected me to everything in the universe and went straight to god. god then "spoke" to me. well, put thoughts into my head. i didnt hear a voice. God told me i was from a group of special selected people. and i was the most special of the group. I was to use my special talents of communication and general awesomeness to unite the world and cure all the worlds ills.

i am an athiest!

Basically, the ssri caused this, i am sure. I was not on any antipsycotic at the time.

Since the DSM says if mania occurs from meds, it doesnt count. i want to know if i have bipolar basically.

Looking back through my moods it is hard to see what i have been like off meds. I have been very stable through the last year and a half since i have been with my girlfriend. No major incidents. But she is going back to her country soon, maybe premenently ... and i can feel unstability looming.

I am med free. HAve been nearly 2 years

So i dont know if i have BP. especially since such a long period of relative stability.

When not on meds, I have deff had depression with psycosis.... damn you voices and deamons!!!

and one occasion i didnt go to work for a week and watched 3 series of 24. I went back into work and when asked where i had been simply said "im jack bauer - i went dark" ...for a day i thought i was jack if i remember correctly.

i know anti-d's make me rapid cycle, get mixed and cause full blown mania .... i mean rapid cycle in like 20 seconds - damn that was bad!

anyway ... anyone have similar experiences?

most BP people need meds always and symptomns are always there .... i know i have been good the past year

/rant off

You can't get a diagnosis off anyone on here - some people will think you have bipolar disorder and others will disagree.

Anti d's can cause mania and some people will be particularly sensitive to it but as DSM IV says, it doesn't count towards a diagnosis.

One thing you don't say is if you have talked this over with a GP or a psychiatrist - something you should do perhaps.

Hi Danny.

I was diagnosed with bipolar last Feb. I was put on Depakote (mood stabiliser) and Mirtazapine (anti d). Later on last year I was also put on Olanzapine. Eventually the anti depressant stopped working and my psychiatrist changed me to venlafaxine, which is reputed for causing high mood and sending bipolar and bipolar prone patients into mania. Needless to say, it sent me into a very nasty mixed manic episode, for which I was hospitalised and put on lithium amongst other things.

Generally speaking it is recommended not to put bipolar patients on anti depressants unless adjunctive to a mood stabiliser. Cyclothymia is within the bipolar spectrum, so maybe the use of anti depressants is also the same as with bipolar.

I'm not qualified to comment though really, so you would do best to ask your doctor if you are concerned you may have bipolar

Thank you ladies. (y)

Sorry for that rant earlier.

I try not to live with labels, I am going to cary on doing my thing. I have been quite stable for the past 2 years, something i havent had in a decade before.

I got worried because after speaking with my friend who is BP II, i realised i have had a manic episode. I thought it was hypomania. That got me frightened that i might have BP I.

Time will tell i suppose.

In any case, i know what a manic and mixed state is.

I wouldn't wish a mixed state on my worst enemy.

(im not going to go to the doctor, if a crisis occurs i will)

Hypomania is Bipolar II - Bipolar I is the same but with psychosis (briefly)

Yeah i know...

i have had it at both ends, but I am now adamant i dont have BP 1 or 2, it was just medically induced from the drugs.

Although i have had psychosis with depression when i wasnt medicated.

I feel kinda guilty jsut talking about this and on here in particular.

I feel like a fraud.

If you have real concerns about a mental health problem that doesn't make you a fraud and then you find out that they were med induced that doesn't make you a fraud. It just means you were concerned.

It is correct that AD induced mania is not a symptom of bipolar according to the DSM but I have read of bipolar specialists saying it should be. Cyclothymia is a chronic disorder you have been symptom free 2 years without meds. I would guess you are bipolar and BP 1 is more likely than something milder because of the psychosis and your break from symptoms for 2 years.

Hi there I guess everyone has an opinion however the best thing is to be seen by a psychiatrist once they know you well enough then you can get a correct diagnosis. I in all honesty could say that meds caused my mania however I know in my heart thats not the case I was so good at hiding that side of me for most my life that even all the years of being treated for depression I can see now that indeed I have always had bipolar.
The irritability, rage and amazing energy, combined with the depression had to be bipolar
