Hi, this came recently & must be good since it's in Derby, home of the greatest football team in the Universe! Look it's my delusion & I'm happy with it so leave me alone. Just my little joke in case you are wondering, anyway...

Oops can't copy & paste the email, will try the pdf..

Richard Bentall (one of my heroes & an inspiration for my research), Robert Whitaker (another hero who described some gene research as fraudulent), speakers from Finland (home of a very enlightened approach to mental illness), & Michelle Creed who is involved in a community football project and compassion not necessarily together I guess & lots of other great speakers will be there.

Looks to be a really good day,

Roger

Bump!!!

I've just booked & wondered whether anyone else is going. It can be free for the 'unwaged' if you contact them.

On the 'Hippocratic Oath' thread http://www.mentalhealthforum.net/forum/showthread.php?13395-Are-psychiatrists-breaking-the-Hippocratic-Oath&p=344730#post344730 there has been some discussion of alternatives to the standard approach of the medical model in which there has been no improvement in outcomes in a 100 years despite the drugs & new interventions!!! If you think that's cobblers then come to Derby (home of the greatest team in the Universe-quite happy with my delusion, thanks!) & see what Richard Bentall says 'cos he said it! And he is a lovely gentle-man, in my opinion having met him.

There are workshops on community-based football projects and compassion-based therapy & using the Soteria philosophy inside & outside psych services in the Netherlands.

Soteria are trying to raise funds for a 'sanctuary' in Brighton & in Bradford.

Be great to meet Forum members-I'm the fat one with the grin!

All the best,
Roger

I can't make it, but I look forward ( I live in california). If any one would please post highlights of the conference and any videos you can get of it. Unfortunately, I live in an area of California which is heavily conservative \ republican and things like Soteria and the Recovery Model are considered "Dangerous".

Thanks mister_lister, I'll see what I can get for us. I suspect the Soteria network would also be considered dangerous here since it perhaps challenges the status quo of drug companies and the psychiatric system.

I would like to go - but get very uneasy leaving the local area. & feel overwhelmed at all the logistics of it all.

I've had no details yet of where the venue is or advice about accommodation etc. That's quite unusual though I guess Soteria is a small set up & certainly would not have drug company sponsorship! When I get more details I'll post 'em.
Years ago I went to a BACP (counselling registration company) research conference that was sponsored by Carling. Having been to a workshop run by someone who had recovered from alcohol addiction we were presented at dinner with Carling's samples! I tried the dreaded Special Brew-really cheap & about 15 percent proof-god one sip was enough-sugary sweet with a kick-foul but maybe like nectar for someone who needs it.

Here's some updates about the Conference:

"Thanks for your email. We will be sending out further details of the conference to those who have booked already within the next week. To answer your questions though:

1. Yes, parking is available.
2. A Healthy lunch and refreshments for 2 tea breaks will be provided
3. Here is a link to a google map which shows the 3 nearest (cheapest) hotels as well as the venue: http://g.co/maps/2xee7
4. We hope to be including all powerpoint presentations on our website after the conference, and may be putting videos of the keynote presentations online as well.

With Best Wishes,

Nick Putman,
Soteria Network."

And a PS "Just realised that I sent you the link to East Midlands airport and not the conference venue/hotels. Here is the correct link: http://g.co/maps/g6vj2 "
