Introduction

Across the years there have been numerous terms circulating in books from self-help circles, economy, philosophy, the esoteric and many others which strived to inform the reader about or rather promise him abstractions such as ”wealth” , ”happiness”, ”success”, ”magnetism” and other of the like. The success that these particular books have brought to their readers is variable. There are some who have not changed even after reading the book several times, while others seem to have had it easier. The last category is,without a doubt, more fortunate, but their success must not stay a mystery. Focus on the following 3 aspects : 1. Do self-help books actually help out their readers? 2. If self-help books don’t actually impact their readers, can we use a certain method to extract maximum value out of them and still get satisfaction by changing our behavior for the better? 3. Is there a book that actually ”changes” people for the better?

The Concepts of Activity and Passivity.

Activity represents a sustained effort, an investment of energy in a certain direction with the purpose of initiating action or changes. Passivity represents a state of stagnation in which the individual , in particular, is acted upon by thoughts , emotions , desires, impulses, memories etc. and it represents the opposite of being the agent of initiation of new directions of activities. Remember a time when you felt irritable, sad , vengeful, suffering or other negative emotions or states. Were you ”acting” on them or were you feeling like you were ”being acted upon” by them even though you might have revelled in them? You were being acted upon by them. Enough time passes under the distress of suffering and negative emotions (and problems) and you will experience decay and systemic breakdown. The cure to such a situation would be the recognition of such a state (through self-study and selfobservation) and by setting a conscious new direction(say towards bliss or freedom). Let’s take the example of the ”Mind” in terms of ”Activity” and ”Passivity”. In terms of Activity of the Mind , it would mean : purposeful calculations, planning, desiring, thinking and feeling, remembering, problem-solving etc. You can also purposefully use your mind to draw paintings which you would remember for further use. Get creative with the use of your mind. You can practice your concentration for 15 minutes uninterruptedly etc. From the point of view of Passivity, the mind would be in this case : fretting, worrying, catastrophizing, daydreaming, fantasizing aimlessly or any other thing that acts upon the mind, without the mind being purposefully engaged with some activity. Always aim for something or have an objective for your Mind. Other exameples of Activity of the human Mind would be: drawing a triangle in your mind line by line using a light-dot, reflecting willingly about your past and present, restraining yourself, containing your emotion(instead of possibly letting it fly off the handle), imagining yourself doing 20 push-ups and then putting that into practice (sustain the scenario purposefully and effortly), reciting or memorizing poetry or books (passages, ideas etc), problem-solving (math, social, personal etc.).Keywords : purposefully, willingly, intentionally... When we think rationally, we are keeping the mind active, when we daydream it is passive.

Observing Ego (The Ego as an Observer).

Observing Ego represents a psychological tool which is based in the idea of reflecting upon your own behavior, calibrating it in the present and setting a new course for yourself in the future. Observing Ego is akin to being your own mentor by seeing yourself from outside yourself and recording what is going on. By using Observing Ego you can say to yourself through self-analysis: ”I could have done that better by doing .... in return. ” ; ”A good idea for me would be to....(take up art classes) ” ; ”I might get something good for myself if I do <> ”. A good tool that accompanies Observing Ego is constructive inner talk to go with it. Observing Ego has no affects, engages in no actions and makes no decisions. It simply witnesses with no judgement what your behavior or thoughts/emotions are at one given time.

Boundaries and the Concept of Control.

In our childhood we were dependent upon other people for our caretaking. If we needed something like food, warmth or changing, we would simply cry and our needs would have been met. Once we’re all grown up this mechanism is not working anymore. Society does not reward it. The trouble, however, is that this tendency to cry out to get our needs met formed a conditional reflex in our mind which says : ” I can control the world around me by simply crying. ” This , of course, is a fallacy, but you can recognize how this came to be. ”I cry- it happens. ” or ”I suffer – I get what I want. ” In order to correct this self-destructive tendency, you must get your attention back toward yourself and what you do control and stop wasting time focusing on the uncontrollable. Remember that suffering is not rewarded in any way and set a new course for yourself every time you catch yourself doing that. A boundary represents the limit of what you control. You might ask what is a boundary made of. The answer is that the boundary is made up of who you actually are – your identity. The more you know yourself and stand by who you are, the more protected against stress you are. Let’s say you’re not a coffee drinker, but somebody insists that you drink coffee. You have two choices: to say ”no” or to say ”yes”. If you say ”yes” then you will fret on the inside about how ”you don’t drink coffee” and how ”you shouldn’t be doing this” – energy wasted , negative emotions and identity compromised. If you say ”no” , however , you maintain you identity, your self-respect, your energy and time – a solution . When it comes to your identity the answer is always ”no” to compromise. In order to strengthen your boundary, you must know what makes up who you are, what makes up your identity. For example, you could be : a painter , who doesn’t drink coffee, alcohol and doesn’t smoke and, at the same time, a marketing-enthusiast, start wars fan and poetry lover. The list doesn’t stop here. Find out who you are and write it down somewhere. Get back to it every time you need to review yourself and who you are. And remember : there are always two causes to stress : outer influence and faulty management of inner life. Pay very careful attention to both because once you beat stress in your life, a big part of one’s challenges are overcome and the road to a quiet, blissful life is open for you.

The Prison of our Mechanicalness.

Most of us live through life half asleep. We get lost in our imagination, about things we would like to do or in scenarios of revenge, hatred and humiliation. These pictures that are plastered on the screen of our mind distract us in such a way that hours may sometimes pass by that we used only in an imaginary space. Nothing happened outside of ourselves. In fact, for an outside observer, we wouldn’t have done anything , we would have just stared into outer space, got ourselves busy just to be busy or moved around aimlessly. The passive form of imagination sets us up in such a way that anything can happen to ourselves in the time that we get lost in this show of pictures and scenrarios creeping up on us. We could lose time , we could get in a fight under the impulse of the moment, we could hit our big toe or get into a car crash. Let’s say , for example, that you are in a discussion that goes the wrong way. You and the other start talking in contradiction. What would happen if you would have been an impulsive individual who obeys and falls prey to his own imagination? The argument would most likely degenerate, probably into a fight. Now, you could say „This is just a far-fetched example. No one really gets into things like that...” . Wrong... Have you ever known a guy who just „spontaneously” punched a guy in the nose , or someone who „out of the blue” commited suicide, or trigger-happy police officers, or angry mobs? You most likely heard of such cases or perhaps worse. What did these people have in common, besides personal issues? An amplified imagination (to which they were passive) that gave them a jolt in the wrong direction. Our imagination, therefore, can get us into trouble if left unchecked and unacknowledged. It can be a good friend, but most of the time is a bad company which amplifies our suffering by magnifying the meaning of certain events or by creating scary scenarios which have nothing to do with reality most of the time. The attention that we do command has to be awakened and awake. We will use it to recognize and to know when our imagination gets the best of us and when we are passive to it. The thing is, that if enough time passes by with our minds being mechanical, with pictures and imagination dominating it instead of rational thought , we will enter psychological sleep and act like a robot without even figuring it out. Even more time passes, and we will eventually start believing that what we imagine and picture in our mind is real. We might even believe that we are something that we are actually not and it will hurt when someone else will point out the truth about ourselves and our situation. The key to our Prison is awareness (mental presence and observation) and self-knowledge. We net to get real... (quite literally as we will see).

The Conscious Shock.

The way out of the mechanical state of mind starts with the recognition of such a state within ourselves. Such a state occurs when we feel like we are on autopilot. It occurs when we feel that something else is driving our being from behind our eyes and not our very selves. It could be an emotion, a thought , a desire, a memory etc. In order to break out of such self-hypnosis we must remember that we are prone to it and to „snap out of it” once we catch ourselves being driven by something rather than ourselves. Enough time passes when you do that and you will notice that you are less prone to what the buddhists call „delusion” . You no longer fall prey to the phantoms of your own mind. You have to remember yourself constantly. You might get lost in an activity or emotion, but every time you get „sucked into” that particular situation, control your attention back toward yourself and build a new course for yourself. Don’t waste your energy by losing yourself in something which builds negative momentum inside yourself. One powerful way to build up your will and mental continuity is to set an intention, whatever that may be (say writing a book or doing 20 push-ups), and then letting nothing interrupt that intention. There could be hunger, there could be pain, there could be sleep or there could be social events. It doesn’t matter. What does matter is getting that plan to the end or what does matter is keeping that mental fluidity by unwavering intent. A particular case of keeping your intention is by exercising attention. At first , your attention will waver, it will change from one object to another without you noticing it or against your will. Make an intention to keep the attention focused to the point where you can actually control it. At first you will hold your attention on a single spot , then on another and then another until you feel like you have a hold on this phenomenon. You will notice how your grip on attention starts developing and how it will impact other areas of your life. Practice.

Self-Understanding.

You might not understand cars, guns or dancing. It doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, the most important thing which you could have understood in this life was yourself. You might understand football, but you don’t acknowledge or know your own skills with a ball, it won’t count for much, right? Self-Understanding is a process that can be entertained anywhere and almost at any time. It involves knowing what makes you tick, your weaknesses, your strengths, your passions , your goals. You might have ended up considering the last four words as empty as time went by, but when it comes to YOUR passions, weaknesses, strengths and goals, they are not. Write them down if you have to. For example, you might remember a time when a kid hit you on the playground and you felt humilliated. You can start by saying : It’s okay, I was just a kid. The fact of the matter is that kids do these sort of things to one another. They can be quite cruel. Nobody knows what sort of hurt that other kid suffered that made him do that to me. I admit I could have handled that differently. I could have punched him too, but that probably wouldn’t have solved anything... the list can go on. Try to apply this model to memories you have or to situations you’ve been in, even to goals and your reason for having certain passions. Talk to yourself about it...

The Ugly Side of Life.

Negative emotions and stresses are everywhere in the environment. They don’t have to be inside yourself. In order to avoid generating stress yourself towards yourself learn to manage your negative emotions and imagination which can be a great source of fictitious self-hurt. The main thing about negative emotions is that they don’t have a certain center where they can crystallize. They cannot exist on their own. They function by capturing your attention and by being fuelled by your imagination. That’s why it is said that in the present there is no hurt. There might not be, but it’s best not to count only on being present. Negative emotions come in the form of anxieties, hatred, envy, revenge, misery, overall suffering etc. When they come creeping understand their causes and observe them inside yourself. Most of them will manifest in your body. When you feel tension in your body, draw your attention upon that particular spot in which you feel it. You will experience a form of relief and, if your attention is strong enough, it will disappear immedialely. Once you understand why it is that it is bothering you, aim with intention to have a better state of mind. Aim for something blissful. Observe yourself. Imagine the picture of a lake and hold it into your mind for 45 seconds. Tell yourself you’re cool etc. There is a thing which man cannot doubt. Do you know what that is? The answer is quite intuitive. Pain. Man cannot doubt his own pain in which he might be in. You can doubt the economy, your spouse, your boss, even God (though I don’t recommend), but not pain. Why? A philosopher by the name of Spinoza back in 1660 said that „Pain represents the transition from a certain perfection to a lower state of perfection.” That means that pain is a signal that you are diminishing in power or integrity. When you experience pleasure, however, you experience going from a lesser perfection to a higher perfection – an increase in power. I’m not talking about the pleasure of eating twinkies here. I’m speaking of pleasures of the mind. Try not to busy your body with pleasure because it will backfire into pain (obesity, tiredness etc.) Gather pleasures of the mind by exercising it and you will never run out of virtue. Don’t be a person who has no values or a guy whose value system is corrupt (thinks that drinking and driving is not a problem, thinks that smoking is somehow healthy or that violence against children is good for example). Know what you hold dear and hold it so. Remember that thinking men cannot be ruled (Ayn Rand). And be aware of anyone and anything that tries to put ideas into your head, including this book. The greatest mistake that one can make is obscuring the truth towards oneself. That is, not telling oneself the way things really are. If you have a smoking addiction, then tell yourself that you have a smoking addiction. Do not let yourself go on autopilot about that and end up chocking in the ER because of lung cancer. If your girlfriend left you tell yourself the truth that it might have been because of you or maybe even all because of her. The point is to tell the truth to yourself no matter what.

Our Center of Gravity.

A center of gravity represents a collection of ideas, behaviors, activities and attitudes which your life circles around. It can be composed of , let’s say, the following : Art, Writing, Working Out, Movies, Songs, Programming, Drawing, Poetry, Egalitarianism, Passion for beauty, Non-Political attitudes etc. The idea is to keep these subjects into your mind for as long as possible and as often as possible in order to form a kind of gravity around them. They will become ingrained into you and give you a direction in life instead of just walking around aimlessly. The thing about the center of gravity is that it will give you balance in life. You will feel purposeful and fulfilled. Make pictures in your mind about these subjects and work with them. Imagine yourself programming. Imagine the sequences of code that you are writing. Or, if it is writing, imagine the things that you write down and remember them, remember lines of poetry that you wrote, ask yourself questions just as an exercise or to improve something like „How could I have done this better?” The possibilities are endless...play Warcraft with yourself in your own mind ,or rather yet, apply these things to something more pragmatic. Know what makes up your center of gravity and stick to it. Do not deviate from your center. You have to know that the center of gravity can also exist outside of yourself as opposed to inside as we’ve just seen. The other case, the one in which the center of gravity is outside, is a form of conditioning. It could be that you’re head over heels for a girl whom you’ve never known and it acts like a sort of magnet for you. Bad situation from my point of view. Keep things to yourself and for yourself. Do not let anyone have the upper hand by being the center of gravity for you.

Laws of this World.

Five of the laws which govern this world are as follow : ”The Law of Three” , ”The Law of Seven”, ”The Law of the Pendulum”, ”The law of Accident” and ”The Law of Cause and Effect”. First of all, The Law of Three states that evey phenomenon, object or person is made up of no more and no less than three forces – the Active Force, the Passive Force and the Neutralizing Force. The Active Force is the one that initiates the action, the Passive Force is the one that opposes the initiating force and the Neutralizing Force brings them both together to form One. Therefore, know what you are trying to do, what opposes you and what helps you in life. The Law of Seven states that nothing can happen without resistance opposing it. For example, your intention is encountering resistance. If you decide to write a book, you will experience times when you don’t feel like writing anymore on the course of actually writing it. This is because of the following. If you remember in music class, there were 2 places in an octave where there is a semitone. Think of your intention as an octave. It therefore has two places where there is a semitone in it. You therefore need to bridge the gaps in your intention twice : once in the beginning and once in the end. When you feel lazy in the beginning of writing that book , you need to boost your motivation to get that book done. That would be the first semitone. What you feel is inevitable and it happens to everyone and everything in this world. It’s all a game of vibrations. The Law of the Pendulum states that, if left unchecked, an activity or process will oscilate between its two extremes. For example , pleasure to pain, if left unchecked will swing from one to another in our body. If we eat too much chocolate, we will experience pain , no matter how good it tasted in the moment. It is just like night following day. Be aware of this process. The Law of Accident states that, if one is dominated by lack of discipline and imagination then anything can happen to him or her – being affected by loss, hurt or other forms of suffering. The aimless fantasizing can get one into pretty dangerous waters. Imagination can lead one into woo-woo land where the individual can lose contact with reality. Lose contact with reality and accidents happen to you. If you pay attention, or rather said, if your attention is controlled and directed (purposefully) and not wavering due to imagination, then accidents do not happen to you. It’s that simple. The Law of Cause and Effect states that every event has a certain cause. This worldview is that of a pragmatic and practical thinker. It is above the mindest of Accident where anything can happen. In this worldview, you know the cause for a certain effect and you implement it in order to obtain the desired effect. It is not wishful thinking and it requires effort. It is worth the time.

Affirmations (Suggestions).

Affirmations are propositions, whether positive or negative, which are expressed towards ourselves or others. Affirmations can be used to implement personality traits, qualities, keep our cool in difficult situations or to keep others at ease. Using suggestions can heal or cripple a person, so , in essence, be careful of what you say. Especially to yourself. Have you ever over-amplified a negative emotion with the things that you said for yourself? How about making the day worse for someone who already had a bad one? Your words have a fantastic power. The way you use them represents a game changer. Suggestions, therefore, have the power to build you up or tear you down as well as others. Let’s take the following example of suggestion : ”The weather is nice today.” This suggestion is a positive one in the sense that it strengthens (maybe not as much as others) one’s psyche. It gives it a motivational impulse and it just gives a positive outlook on life (regardless of the weather). Another example would be : ”The weather is crappy today. ” This suggestion might be accurate, but your outlook on things is not its best. Another way of saying this would be ”The weather could be better today. ” You might think this is a childish way of deceiving oneself. Remember that words can kill. Your word-choice might put you on the path to misery if you are not paying attention to what you are saying. Autosuggestions are suggestions that we make towards ourselves. The thing about autosuggestions is that they work if they are dilligently applied. Don’t make one affirmation (or autosuggestion) and remain only with that. Apply them for at least 15 minutes with intense focus. Examples of autosuggestions are : • I am successful in whatever I do • I plan my work and work my plan • I focus on what is truly essential • I will make the most of new opportunities • Good flows to me, good flows from me • I feel wonderful and alive • I feel the joy of abundance • I speak with confidence and calm assurance • The universe provides for my every want and need • I am healthy and happy • I have a lot of energy • I radiate happiness • I am successful in whatever I do • Everything is getting better every day • My mind is calm One particular kind of autosuggestion is the one made at future tense. For example : I will finish this project in two days or I will be kind to people around me. Say the affirmations in your mind.

Visual Imagery.

Visual Imagery consists of an active imagination with which we will use to craft our personality and solve our problems. Imagine yourself in a purposeful manner in various scenarios : at school , at a coffee shop , with your partner, at work etc. Imagine the ways in which you would respond to different situations in which you might be involved. Apply those responses later when the situations appear.

Logical Thinking.

There are numberless books which bring about the topic of critical thinking or reasoning. In the following lines you will see the structure of what comprises logical thinking . Apply it in whatever life situations you can. Logical thinking is composed from the following elements : 1. Judgement – a proposition , either negative or affirmative (just like suggestion), which has the purpose of informing us about a phenomenon, object or person. For example : ”Outside is raining” or ”My TV doesn’t work anymore.” 2. Reasoning – a combination of two judgements of the same nature (either particular or general) which have the purpose of forming a new judgement of the opposite nature to that of the first two. For example : Inductive Reasoning : Ducks multiply by laying eggs. Owls multiply by laying eggs. This means (or results) that birds multiply by laying eggs. (2 particulars and 1 general statements). Deductive Reasoning : A man can’t be in two places at the same time. People can’t be teleported . Therefore, that particular person had to be in one place and not the other.(2 general and 1 particular statements). 3. Comparison – always compare two or more things of the same kind. 4. Analysis and Synthesis – The process of decomposing an event, phenomen, or person in order to further study and the process of recomposing the object and extracting a main idea about it. 5. Generalization, abstraction, concretization. Presenting a general rule or characteristic about a class of objects such as : ”All drivers are rude.” Or ”No one cares... ” . Abstraction is the process of removing physical, spatial, or temporal details or attributes in the study of objects or systems to focus attention on details of greater importance. Concretization is the process of exemplifying a certain process.

Yes and taking responsibility for every aspect of our lives . Also knowing there is a elite in all walks of society who want power and privileges over the people . Their greatest tool is ideas to control . The catholic church who ruled the world for 1000 yrs. Using the idea that if you didn't follow them you burn forever in hell. Main stream science that says everything is a condition of our genes or up bringing. When quantum physics has proved over 100 years with experiments that how a physicist thinks can change the course of a experiment . That consciousness effects everything raise a persons consciousness the mind will change .
