Small red blood cells?

I had a blood test done yesterday and received a call from a hospital doctor to discuss my results. She told me although my haemoglobin is fine (no anaemia), my MCV is low, which means I have small blood cells. She said it could be due to iron deficiency or I was born with it. I'm due for another blood test to rule out iron deficiency soon. What has me confused is she said my small red blood cells will produce no noticeable symptoms on a day to day level and its nothing to worry about, yet iron deficiency is horrific symptoms wise and I'm being tested for that?

I can't understand why you're confused.. sorry, i'm probably being a bit daft.

Are you thinking that you might have iron deficiency or that you don't? x

I'm thinking I might have iron deficiency. It would explain some of the symptoms I've been getting; confusion, lethargy, difficulty breathing, feeling like I'm about to pass out.
