There have been some good dialogues on this bipolar forum here recently about sleep. Feel free to browse them.

It's very common with bipolar, you can be hypomanic or manic and have boundless energy and little need of sleep for periods, you can have periods in which you can sleep for hours and wake up every morning feeling as though you've had none.

Your conscious or subconscious can switch on and start doing things at the most inconvenient times, it's all usually stimulated by the subconscious, it can ping you something you've been searching for the answer to it's worked out through it's calculations and cross referencing of all relevant information it's recorded and start an incredible acceleration of your conscious mind with that, or, after a lengthy hypomanic or manic period, the subconscious can switch on, and for me it seems take on the hypomania or mania and start processing, filing and storing the vast information and experiences you've got through trying to catch up. That's probably the weirdest, because you're awake, you're conscious that you're not thinking about anything, but you can feel your head is doing some other form of processing at considerable speed

I’m right there with you. I’m not in an episode right now but have noticed decreased need for sleep lately, so I may be entering into mania soon. For me it’s an early warning sign; but I’m also adjusting meds so I’m sure mania will be preventable. I’m sorry you’re struggling, it’s not easy. Keep on keeping on. :)

I have had issues with my sleep pattern since I was 9. I am now 37 and I struggle to get to sleep at an appropriate time. Take the last 4 months for example.
I go to bed between 1-3am. Usually it takes me around 1-2 hours to fall asleep. Then I get up between 8-9am everyday.
Then the strange part, at least once every 8-10 days, I will actually go to bed at a reasonable time and fall asleep, because I am actually tired. It is the weirdest thing.

Then during an episode of hypomania, I will sleep less than 2 hours a night and be completely fine.
Or in the most extreme episodes, I won't sleep for 2-3 days. I will just wander around the house being quiet and listening to music. Most of the time, I will go for a walk outside to clear my head and to get out of the house.

The key part is the setting of that sleep-wake cycle, rising and getting the daylight, and then establishing a routine throughout the day, long before you're even thinking of sleep, so that your body has a routine. An almost: 'This is when we wake, this is when we exercise, this is when we eat, this is when we sleep' way about it.
I've read studies that say Bipolar sufferers more often than not have a preference for going to sleep later so if that's how you are then by all means try and work with that rather than trying to change it (personally I feel like I'm feeding it if I stay up late; I definitely function better going to bed early and getting up early, although I would prefer to stay up late as that's when I feel like my brain is at it's best - but maybe that's the problem, you'd be allowing your brain to really wake up right when you should be winding down. Just a theory).

There's plenty of Bipolar/sleep stuff here if you get chance for a read. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/pcn.12688
