Should I get an OCD diagnosis before going to therapy?

I am new to this forum and have a feeling that I have OCD or a sub-set of OCD (HO-OCD). I am nervous about seeing a therapist first so I am wondering if I should first get an actual confirmation that what I am dealing with is OCD (i.e. seeing a psychiatrist). I truthfully don't have full confidence that I have OCD which is why I need an expert's opinion. I've seen an OCD specialist in therapy before but I didn't find it helpful in understanding if what I am experiencing IS OCD, and not something else. I know that therapists can't make a clinical diagnosis, but I feel I need to be thoroughly assessed. I'm looking for some advice. What should I do?

Btw the therapist that I saw did tell me that I was experiencing OCD-like symptoms, but of course she couldn't make a clinical diagnosis. Based on my never-ending anxious thoughts and obsessions about my sexual orientation, I feel the need to get a clinical assessment.

Hi Robert012habbo, thanks for responding and sharing your experience with therapy. I could be experiencing SOOCD, but being a queer person who is terrified that she is actually heterosexual or asexual. I'm still not sure... Anyway it's best if I give more background information about myself.

For most of my life, I thought I was straight. I am a 27 y.o. female. About 3 years ago, I began to question my sexuality and I thought I was going through the normal questioning process. I actually came out as bisexual, and then lesbian to people, including my family, but over the last year or so I have been experiencing extreme self-doubt. So much so that I had to go back to trying to figure out what my sexuality is. When I began dating women after coming out, I felt like my self-doubt completely took over my mind and body, that I lost all my desire for women... or I was never interested in them in the first place - that is the source of my anxiety and fear.

I'm not sure if this is an OCD thing or if it is unspecified anxiety. I don't want to offend those who truly suffer from OCD, but I feel like I'm past the denial phase and something else is going on with me. I just want to know who I am, that's all. I don't think I have internalized homophobia. I I want to be happy and comfortable with whatever identity I give myself: straight, gay, bi, whatever. It seems like I can never been happy with any label, and even if I pick one and am happy for a while, I go back to questioning and obsessing all over again.
  • I am constantly questioning my sexual orientation on a daily basis, to the point where I am obsessing over my sexual orientation
  • I obsess over if I am straight or lesbian, and I feel I must pick one or the other.
  • I feel like I do have intrusive thoughts about women in a sexual way. It's negative in that I feel that in real life, I actually can't seem to form meaningful connections with women, and maybe I am only sexually interested them?
  • I ruminate over past behaviors and attractions I could have had towards some men and women.
  • I have extreme worry that my sexuality is constantly changing.
  • I don't have anxiety over whether someone thinks I am lgbtq. I actually feel less anxiety and happier if someone does think so. I feel validated. I am not happy when someone thinks I am either asexual or straight b/c I've never had sex and that must mean I am asexual and/or haven't found the right guy yet. This fear is definitely fueled by being under lockdown due to the pandemic
  • I worry that I am actually bisexual, but I cannot accept anything about myself that is not black and white
  • I just worry... a lot.

I am not sure but I think there no test for OCD and the healthcare provider makes the diagnosis after asking you about your symptoms. There are some online tests and quizzes also which you can try. But the best way to diagnose OCD is to see a licensed mental health professional (psychologist, social worker, counselor, psychiatrist, or other trained medical professional) with relevant experience and training

Some OCD quizzes which you can try.
3 Minute Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Test
Quiz - Do I Have OCD? | OCD Test
NOCD | OCD Quiz

I hope this will help you(y)

@Albertina_Wanderson, thanks for sending me these links! I've only taken the last quiz my results were:

Your responses suggest that you may be experiencing general OCD symptoms. The subtype indicated is: SO-OCD.

I am still going to see a psychologist about this. If it is not OCD at all, then I don't know what it is lol.
