I used to be a happy guy, now I feel sad and dark from the beginning of the day. It seems like the only thing that makes me happy is food. My wife is ready to divorce me and I just want to be happy again!

hi rb :welcome: !

I think the first thing to know is
IT ISNT YOUR FAULT !
its easy to blame yourself for a mental illness

and also a bit disappointing
if your wife is not prepared to help you

surely that is the whole point of a marriage !

you need to learn how to nurture yourself
go easy on yourself and find out what works for you

hopefully you are looking into therapy and possibly medication
if the therapy is not enough

we are happy you have joined us

Medication scares me, I tried therapy before. It's like I'm ok, then the darkness sets in. Any other ideas on how to cope?

well therapy is no different from talking on here really

but other ideas would be to move out
and live separately from your wife for a while
as it does not sound like she is helping your self esteem

or find out if there is something missing in your life
something you really wanted to do
but pushed aside in order to get on with the basics
could be a work thing or a leisure thing

or you might need some rest, some exercise, a change of diet
something like that

please remember though we are not professionals here
and a professional would have a much better idea of what to do

Eating is great in making yourself happy. Another thing to be happy is to do activities that make you happy such as exercising like biking, swimming, doing yoga and the like. Do your hobbies too like cooking, gardening, etc. Helping other people would make you happy too. Listening to good music and watching funny films or movies or like youtube videos will help raise your happiness levels. Happiness is a choice so choose to be happy.

Depression can definitely destroy a marriage. It is destroying my marriage. I will soon be divorced. Few people can understand or cope with a depressed person. Only someone who has suffered with it can understand it.

Maybe medication scares you, but if your mental state is quite bad, and it is destroying your relationships and your life, perhaps you should consider it. It is not a panacea, but meds do help a large number of people.
