Looking for advice on tapering. Is it possible to wait until you get withdrawals then take a tablet to stave off symptoms

Looking for advice on tapering. Is it possible to wait until you get withdrawals then take a tablet to stave off symptoms
Hi TOA,
I successfully tapered off antipsychotics, but did so over the course of several months with the support of my PDoc, Carecoordinator and GP. It was not easy - I had terrible insomnia and depression.

I would not recommend a cold turkey taper. This is when most people slide back into the darkness of psychosis.

Would you like to tell us more about your symptoms and the reasons you were placed on an antipsychotic drug?

Best wishes - Coast

I never had a problem with risperidone. Didn't have any side effects that I remember. I didn't have any problem with withdrawal symptoms when I quit risperidone either. Once I tapered off it gradually over several months and I ended up having a relapse of my psychotic symptoms. The other time I did it cold turkey and my symptoms got much worse after about a week. So apparently I learned that I have to stay on an antipsychotic to be able to function. Now I'm on Geodon (ziprasidone) and I get horrible withdrawal symptoms when I forget to take my medicine. But at least I don't have any side effects when I take it.

Oh, now I remember my side effects from risperidone. It was just weight gain and higher sugar levels in my blood which made me pre-diabetic. But I felt fine when I took it.

I have a shuffled walk. And I keep pacing up and down the house. I can’t sit still. Also it’s dulling my senses. Trying to quit cold turkey. Serious insomnia and bad flu like symptoms. Feels like a herion withdrawals.
Anyway thanks for your reply it gives me hope it can be done.

I take Risperidone, have problems, but can't say it is the drug's fault. Psychiatrist recently increased my dosage from 1mg to 2mg, and gave me a bottle of .5mg to take during the day as needed for, "distress associated with perceptual disturbances." Without it I think I'd be worse.

Sorry to hear you've experienced psychosis. It's a truly and totally debilitating illness.

Do you think you're well enough to come off antipsychotics? Would you consider another antipsychotic with less side effects? The important thing is to stay well and not slide into psychosis.

Like you my withdrawal was horrific and that was in a medically controlled and supported way ......

My sincere best wishes

First, go to your GP and ask for help in tapering gradually. Even small reductions in Risperidone will cause quite difficult side effects.

Be prepared for days when your motivation will be low. I bulk cooked so I had a range of freshly prepared home cooked food.

Insomnia, for me anyway was awful. I had returned to work at this point and when I started to taper I would regularly go 48 - 72 hours with absolutely no sleep at all. You will need to have considered strategies to cope with this.

Be prepared to increase your dose if you feel you are slipping backwards.

The most important piece of advice I would give is inform those closest to you that you are tapering off an antipsychotic drug and ask them to watch for any deterioration in your mental health. Often those closest to us notice these differences where we are oblivious.

I had terrible gastrointestinal problems to deal with too. I had to dramatically alter my diet to maintain a healthy bowel.

Get your rest when you can and don't feel bad about having a short nap during the day.

This is what worked for me. But it took determination, obstinateness, good planning, and support from the medics and my friends.

Please feel free to ask me anything further. I will try to help you if I can,

Best wishes

I’m currently doing a very rash taper and the side effect of walking everywhere is keeping me active and able to do my postman job at light duties.even after nights of no sleep. I know this can’t go on though.

I'd nick off to the pub and drink several pints of Guinness, then you won't care if you stopped taking Risperidone.
