reoccuring nightmares

People say that dreams, especially when they reoccur, often carry some kind of message, not in any supernatural or prophetic way, but as a sign of something in our lives which may be causing anxieties etc. I will describe a common nightmare I have, so if you don't wish to read that is fine, I won't be offended :) If anyone can, however, illuminate any underlining themes that would be great.
I have this reoccuring nightmare which seems to follow a similar theme: I live in a small town, but last night I dreamt it was attacked by Russians (No offence to any Russians, I have no ill-feelings toward anyone, and I think the fact it was Russia was arbitrary) At first there was an explosion, and my family and I went out to see what was going on. Everyone was confused, and people wheeled out so many bodybags. There was a sense of urgency. Then military planes flew over and began dropping bombs, everyone was scared and confused. We watched from my house as a huge bomb was dropped on some houses, destroying them. Everyone did not know why the town was being attacked, only being a small town. I was frightened about trying to leave the house to escape, as people were being shot or bombed, but I was also worried about staying indoors as everywhere was being bombed. Eventually we fleed, hiding from the planes and helicopters until we got to the coast, which is where everyone seemed to be heading. It was then that the Americans arrived in planes and started fighting the Russians. This was indeed an odd dream in retrospect, but at the time was terrifying.
I had a similar dream a few days ago, but I was back at university and it wasn't the Russians but Gadafi attacking Britain in response to recent events (probably dreamt that because of the news) There I also had to make my way to the coast where, and this is a bizarre bit, had to escape on buses that travelled on the sea.
I used to have dreams about someone chasing me with a weapon of some sort, and it would just be me, but recently it seems to be on a bigger scale. Thank you for reading this long post.

It means that there are aspects of yourself that your battling with; & that are 'foreign'; or not understood by you.

A solution is self acceptance, exploration; & going into & working through unresolved trauma.

Thank you for the reply Apotheosis, that does make sense.

It could be that there's some stress in your life, or perhaps a person, or an event, that you're trying to escape from, and you know deep down that you can find a way of doing that.
Or is it that you may be stressed about something that may happen that you know or don't know about, like a fear, in the future, that you know might cause you stress, and you want to find a way of avoiding it?
Or it could be is that you don't like the town you are in and want to move? Do you feel a bit restricted in the town you're living in or don't like the people there?

Does any of that ring any bells?

Hi DoctorInternet2

All three of those suggestions sound familiar. I'm very stressed about the future, such as not having the control at the moment to take it in the direction I want. What you said about the town I'm in is very true...it's not so much the people, but I feel held back in a way in terms of opportunity.
Thanks for the comments

I agree with what has been said, it sounds like you are stressed about something are feel the need to escape from it. The fact the the you are dreaming about war like environments might reflect chaos in your life and the going to the coast part might reflect needing calm and moving to a new place.

I have been having a problem with nightmares myself recently and I have a good idea of what I think they mean. I can totally sympathise with how horrible it is.

Thanks for the comment, piglet. I think I do need to go somewhere...the sea is a common theme. Perhaps a change of scenery. I've been in this town too long.
I hope you find a way to end your own nightmares soon, it certainly doesn't make the thought of sleep too appealing.
