Recovering from mental health without medication

I had a severe paranoid psychosis for 2 years in my early 20's. I was on seroxat and sulphride for 2 years and I was smoking dope and using other drugs. I came of the sulpride and seroxat over 21 years ago. I was in a very bad way with involuntary body movements, fits and a feeling of my quivering with an electric pulse. I had terrible nightmares and a lot of intrusive thoughts. I relapsed on dope for about 6 months and the psychosis started to come back. I have had a lot of depression and anxiety over the last 20 years, I have hardly had any prescribed medication, once I had beta blockers for 3 days as I wanted to go into my local mental institution. I have sruggled at times by not being on medication, I use socialising and exercise, this has helped me to recover and the mutual support of some friends that have their own mental health issues.
At one time I was unable to leave the house due to the pschosis I had in my 20,s. I have travelled to india 4 times and had a really good time. I have found it very helpful to have hobbies, one hobby I have really enjoyed is running. It has been great for the low energy of depression I have had for years. I belong to a writing group and I go swimming. I have not abused drugs for nearly 21 years. This has helped me a lot. I still get strong anxiety at times and a lot of obsessional thinking. I keep moving forward with recovery.

Awesome, sounds like you're doing a great job. I am looking after my own mental health without the use of meds also. I have voices, a really creative, visual mind and have experienced a lot of obsessive thinking and fear. I am doing very well and using mindfulness techniques and dialoguing with my voices. My life experience is getter better and better. I believe we all have the power within us to recover. I have suffered a great deal, but in my wisdom I know that this is my path. Keep going love D x
