Hi there, I have suffered from Pure O for quite some time. I began seeing a psychiatrist in 2006 and also began taking Lexapro at the same time (still continue both). I have had the usual intrusive thoughts and obsessions over the years (scrupulosity, H.O.C.D., harming /not loving family, being a pedophile, etc.). I have learned to dismiss the more common ones previously mentioned with relative ease. I can recognize these thoughts and obsessions as O.C.D. and nothing more. However, I am dealing with a new form of obsession that is really making me feel awful.

I am a huge sports fan, particularly the New England Patriots. I pretty much live and breathe the Pats. Well, I tend to display negative remarks about the team on social media pages (as both a form of superstition and as a form of passion if they team is playing bad. I'm not afraid to criticize my teams).

To make a long story short, I was on pins and needles watching the Pats win the Super Bowl the other night. I was ecstatic, embracing my brother, dad, mom and even the dog after they won. This all changed in an instant because of O.C.D.

I thought to myself, mere minutes after I celebrated, "What are you celebrating for? You're not even a real fan. Look at how people question your loyalty to the team on social media." This immediately put me into a funk. I struggled to even watch the parade today. I should mention I'm 33 years old and have been following the team since I was about 12. So, I've seen some bad and mediocre Pats teams.

I know O.C.D attacks the things that are closest to you, things and people you love the most. I recognize my current state of despair as O.C.D. Why can't I get over this then? I have this empty feeling about my Pats, where I usually have either intense positive or negative feelings.

I'm sorry to have rambled. I also apologize if you think this is a joke or not important. But, to me it is. I can't imagine not looking forward to something I enjoy so much. Please help me if you have ever experienced something similar or have any advice. Thank you!

Hi CW0728.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be of any help but just wanted to say hello and welcome to the forum.

I don't think anyone here will consider this unimportant to you or think it's a joke. We all suffer and struggle in our own ways and won't make light of another person's issues.

Hopefully someone will be along soon with some actual advice!

I wish you well.

Hi CW0728. I have not had a spike as specific as that specifically to sport, I am a big Manchester United fan when it comes to soccer rather than American Football, but I can tell from your post that it would most definitely be distressing as I've had slightly obsessive complexes about my loyalty to my team before and it's been distressing let alone a full on Pure O obsession, of which I'm having some struggles with at the moment on a different topic.

Maybe this one is particularly hard to get over because other people have actually claimed you're "not a proper fan" before so it's hard to shake the possibility of it, as if there is evidence for it because of others opinions. You clearly are a real fan but reassuring yourself against those voices is just opinion vs opinion so you can never achieve a 100% answer. Like with other pure O cases, as easy as it is for me to say, a good start may be to accept you're not a "real fan" (even though I think that clearly is not the case) and then trying to become comfortable with that thought could hopefully help to ease your obsessions as you'll stop fighting the accusative thought to some extent.

Sorry if I've not been much help but that's what I could think of.
