Data for the analysis came from "summary basis of approval" (SBA) files maintained by the FDA for psychiatric agents receiving approvals from 1991 to 2011, including supplemental indications as well as entirely new drugs. These include more detail than the information on product labels, although not full patient-level data, Khan and colleagues explained.
So this research is based on data from clinical trials submitted to the FDA. This will also include only the studies the Big Pharma companies felt it was beneficial to their interests to release to the FDA. The worst ones they sit on and don't release. They can do that.

Here's how a typical clinical trial works, in this case comparing Abilify to placebo:

A longer-term trial enrolled 310 inpatients or outpatients meeting DSM-IV criteria for schizophrenia who were, by history, symptomatically stable on other antipsychotic medications for periods of 3 months or longer. These patients were discontinued from their antipsychotic medications and randomized to Abilify 15 mg/day or placebo for up to 26 weeks of observation for relapse. Relapse during the double-blind phase was defined as CGI-Improvement score of ≥5 (minimally worse), scores ≥5 (moderately severe) on the hostility or uncooperativeness items of the PANSS, or ≥20% increase in the PANSS total score. Patients receiving Abilify 15 mg/day experienced a significantly longer time to relapse over the subsequent 26 weeks compared to those receiving placebo.
What many clinical trials show, is that cross tapering to another antipsychotic has better efficacy at mitigating withdrawal problems than abruptly stopping an antipsychotic and taking a sugar pill instead.

It's something to think about isn't it?

i.e. those in the placebo groups are in withdrawal

Withdrawal from psychiatric drugs has a massive lists of effects, many of which can be life threatening/ending when severe enough. There are people on these boards who it's almost killed, via both physical symptoms and symptoms of mental distress. Many of them won't be aware it was withdrawal after being sold the return of illness lies by professionals. People can die from it. Studies like this show not the benefits of psychiatric drugs but the dangers of withdrawal.

Not long enough to make an accurate assessment? Need studies going into several years duration.
Those studies have been done comparing lifespans over large amounts of people. They find that taking psychiatric drugs reduces lifespans by 12.5 to 25 years. This is marketing not science, that's why it's done this way and not over a long period of time. So people can promote headlines like this and create enough doubt in people's minds (who naively trust "scientists" to be conducting valid analysis) to keep the money rolling in for Big Pharma and the institution of psychiatry. Company's and an institution that get rich off the back of worsening long term outcomes and shortening lifespans of the distressed.

This is the "science" they justify that with. It's trash.
