I have never been diagnosed with anything but I strongly believe that I have PTSD/ Depression.
I'm yet to seek any kind of professional help, but at the minute I feel reluctant about it.
I'd like to know the process around your diagnosis please, how long it took and what your treatment was.
I know I'm asking personal questions, I just want to be as informed as possible.

Hi, if you haven't already, your first stop should be your GP, they can do an assessment and refer you on to other services such as IAPT (improving access to psychological therapies), CMHT (Community mental health team) etc. They may also try and fob you off with anti-depressants, which have their place and can be helpful, but generally more beneficial if combined with some kind of therapy. It can be a long and frustrating road though, depending on how good/receptive your GP is, so be prepared to keep badgering them until you get the help you need.

I suppose it is similar to a physical illness. You describe the symptom and the doctor gives you a diagnosis if he/she can or refers you to someone who can. If you developed red spots over your back, you would describe that to your doctor and they would try to diagnose the problem. They might say that the spots will go away over a period of a few weeks or they might say that it needs treatment. They might also say that they are unsure and then refer you to a specialist.

If you can afford to go private about £175 a consultant psychiatrist will diagnose you after taking a full history and a couple of tests which are called scales. Otherwise you may to wait a fairly long time. If not keep persisting with your gp to see a therapist or the MHT in your area.

I saw your other post too so I'll post here. First of all, don't be afraid to let it out, you need to do this in order to be understood and to get the right help, holding anything back will only hinder you so relax and get in touch with your GP and explain to them all that you think. All of us here with a diagnosis had to go through this route apart from the ones that were hospitalised initially, so don't fret. Explain your problems and see what they say. If they try and fob you off, which they do like to do it seems, dig your heels in and be firm about needing help, you're more likely to get a referral this way I believe. You will then have to a wait a while for that referral and subsequent assessment with a mental health professional. This will be a bit more in depth but kind of similar to the one you have with your GP, it'll mainly just be taking a history from you, what has happened, how you feel etc. Again, honesty and openness is key to you getting the right help. From there they decide what if anything there is to be done and you may get referred on to some kind of therapy etc. If they don't tell you what your diagnosis is, or you aren't sure, just ask them. But this won't be a quick thing, even more so with the whole Covid thing slowing everything that was already slow down even further. Just be patient and get the ball rolling asap.
