Pregnant - worried about Social Services possibly taking my baby. Help.

I'm 24, a student with a huge support system. Diagnosed with BPD 3 years ago, last suicide attempt was 2 years ago. I am in a loving relationship with a man who is extremely supportive. Been stable for over a year and in therapy for two. In education, living alone and able to care for myself adequately.

In spite of this, I'm terrified my baby will be taken from me. I'm only 6 weeks pregnant currently but it's a deep concern. I was transferred to a specialist midwife who deals with mental health already.

Should I be worried? I know BPD is stigmatised and that's my worry. I'll be moving in with family when the baby is here so I won't be alone. My partner and I will then be living in a place together.

:welcome: to the forum.

I hope it all turns out alright. From what you write I personally don't see why there may be any kind of problem as you do have support and a plan of action.

Hello massmedia:welcome:

Congratulations on the expected arrival!
I want to reassure you though, especially as you will have plenty of support I don't think they will take the baby from you as being mentally ill does not automatically make you a risk or danger to the baby.i think the specialist mental health midwife is there to help you and give added support.Don't believe the stereotypes of mentally ill women automatically having their children taken away. You also have the support of family and your partner and I am sure he will fight to stop anything like that.I don't think they are considering it so be reassured it won't happen.

Welcome to the forum and I hope you enjoy it and can use it to express your fear about this however often
they crop up,you can talk about your illness here and how it affects you.Everyone is very friendly.I am Nikitax

I'm relatively newly diagnosed with BPD and am a mum to two girls aged 7 and 12. I do currently have SS involvement because I asked for their help because I was worried I was neglecting them when I was unwell. I'm a single parent which makes things incredibly difficult. They arranged care for my girls when I was sectioned and have been instrumental at getting me home, relatively balanced and my girls home too. They have been amazing during the school holidays in supporting us and I feel more grateful to my SW than anyone from CMHT!
Their priority is always to keep the family together and I'm sure with your family and partners support you should have something to look forward to instead of fear. Wishing you a happy and healthy 9 months x

Hey, I'm 29 weeks pregnant and was diagnosed with BPD 2 years ago. I was also worried about this but there really is nothing to worry about. My midwife put in a referral to social services because of my BPD and I was terrified! All that happened was I had a couple of meetings with her, she asked a lot of questions (which I'm not going to lie, I always think sound like loaded questions). She came round and viewed my home etc and nothing has come of it. She said she didn't think I'd be eligible for social work support (in my head I was thinking YAY!!). Just be honest, they would rather work with you than take your child from you. And she kept saying she was there to help and support. Everything will be fine :)
