Hey was wondering if anyone else had the same problems as me and if they overcame it. I've been having trouble driving on motor ways in fear of having a panic attack and aniexty, intrusive thoughts started the whole thing. I just don't know how did get above it, I tried to drive on motor way again but it doesn't same to get better. I always avoid motor ways now and take the country roads as i feel saver there.

Hi,
How long have you been driving? Usually confidence comes with experience.
Take care

If you are driving in the UK at least, in a city area I am not surprised it makes you feel anxious with the number of driving know it alls on the road who will use just about any excuse to use their horn on you, that used to drive me nuts. The ones who really get me mad are the show offs in flashy cars, I mean really, what is the point? I sold my car several years ago and it is one of the best things I ever did. I get everywhere on foot now, it has saved me a lot of money and stress, has been a massive boost to my fitness and is good for the environment.

Good on you. And yeah there is some people like that on the roads but it isn't them that annoys me it's intrusive thoughts that I was havin bother with. I need a car as I live in the country side so walking and having a bike isn't a option sometimes. Thanks

I have driving anxiety. That's why I never drive. I've never got my license.

Hi,
Have you had any treatment for your anxiety?
Did anything trigger you?

Yes I've been on anti depressants for 10 years now. I recently got new ones so maybe they might help with some therapy.

To answer ur question about trigger, I've had intrusive thoughts about opening the car door or something silly like that and that started the whole panic. I know in my own head it's just intrusive thoughts and nothing happens but aniexty just flares up as if I can't control it.

Hi William,

i have had some experience with anxiety whilst driving, for me it would be that i would notice a potential danger, & then start to become anxious that being aware of it, would cause it to happen.

i found using affirmations / mantras helpful in those instances, they would help me to feel more 'safe, secure & confident', reducing the feeling of anxiety to an acceptable functioning level.

eg. car door

'the car door is shut safe & secure'

i would repeat the phrase internally, until i felt the issue had passed.

If you have not tried this method before, be sure to explore, experiment with it, before you drive :hug1:

I have the same problem. I would love to drive, be able not to rely on others. I get mild anxiety when I sit in the passenger seat. As soon as I get behind the wheel I have a panic attack. Hence, I also haven't gotten a license.

I hope we both get out drivers licenses someday.
