ive found the OA programme helpful in some ways
the meetings are helpful
and I'm great at being a sponsee !
looking at my defects, clearing up the past, making amends etc

then there comes a point where the sponsor
expects me to sponsor someone else !

last time I tried this
I ended up being the sponsor of someone with severe mental health difficulties
that was clearly not getting the help she needs for herself
and it was as if I was her therapist

I felt really out of my depth and went into a depression

same thing happened when I tried to work in mental health
I know this works well for some people
but with me it seems to make me relapse

so now I'm finding it difficult to get another OA sponsor
I decided to be upfront about these issues
before I start working with someone like that
so that I can find someone who is not going to push me

I would have thought that the first thing you do is look after yourself number one. If you are out of your depth with a person, isn't there a mechanism whereby you can get help with them?

thankyou , well this was all happening on Skype
so I could not really go to any doctors with them or anything
and the help I would get from my sponsor
would be following a standard programme of work

and I didnt feel that the programme had provision
for people with severe mental health issues

actually I dont see why I have to be a sponsor
I have been in other 12 step programmes
where I was not expected to do that

I can fully understand you being out of your comfort zone. I know some people consider overeating a mental health issue and it can be. But MH covers such a vast area that unless you understand it fully it would be daunting. I would state to them that you would help anyone with a similar eating problem to your own but you do not have the capabilities to sponsor someone with complex MH issues as well.
And good on you for seeing what your triggers are:hug:

thankyou Daffy
I decided to post about it on their loop
instead of asking individuals from there
and I managed to show someone why I cant do the sponsoring !
finally she understood my point

I dont think I can say that I will sponsor someone
if they dont have complex mental health issues
as it might come across as discrimination

I think I just cant sponsor

I related all the other things I do to serve the group
like I'm even a moderator on their email loop !
which is amazing really
that is all I'm able to do without making myself ill

and yes I have been aware of these triggers
thankyou for encouraging me about it !
