We have written this letter in response to a Oprah Winfrey program about Jani, "The 7-Year-Old Schizophrenic”, broadcast on the 6th November 2009 addressing the issues facing a child in psychiatric care who has been diagnosed a "schizophrenic" at 7 years of age.

A recent Oprah Winfrey Show programme (shown in the USA) concerns the diagnosis given and treatment offered by the psychiatric system. We think it is important that people outside the USA take up the issues because the show is syndicated throughout the world and is very influential in setting the tone for how people with mental health problems are viewed - and - whether or not there is hope of recovery. We are concerned that as a result of the programme, parents of children who have similar experiences to Jani will be left with the impression that they are powerless and will not be able to do anything constructive to help their children to come to terms with their experiences.

It is an open letter addressed to Oprah Winfrey and intended to be seen by the public through newspapers and other media, such as a letter to the editor, or included in websites, blogs, Facebook etc. We have done this in the hope we can provide a more hopeful and positive alternative to the generally pessimistic picture offered by the members of the mental health community featured in the programme, and in the accompanying article on the Oprah website.

We have written a second version of the open letter for mental health professionals so they can be sure that the information contained in the letter below is evidence based and has been subject to scientific research, with the assistance of one of our advisors, Professor Richard Bentall, which you can see here. http://www.intervoiceonline.org/200...r-metnal-health-professionals-with-references

The Oprah programme and accompanying article can be viewed here.http://www.oprah.com/article/oprahshow/20090828-tows-jani-schizophrenic and article from the LA Times here http://www.latimes.com/features/health/la-he-schizophrenia29-2009jun29,0,4834892.story.

To date 151 members of the mental health community from 19 countries around the world, including voice hearers, relatives, citizens, academics and educators, psychiatrists, therapists, psychologists, nurses and researchers have been moved to sign this letter.

If you would like to add you support the open letter you can do so by contacting INTERVOICE at [email protected] giving your name, Background/title and region/country you live in.
