Hello,

Hope you are doing as well as possible.

I have had OCD all my life i am 25, i have tried lots of different methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, deep breathing etc. This affects me more at work when i am working on tasks, i over obsess about the tasks and over analyse and think about things. Has anyone any techniques how i can help not focus on these thoughts please?

I also get very worried when doing things alone like cycling, i use self talk to force myself out. However some times the anxiety gets too much and i do not go out, how can i try lessen this anxiety please? I have tried medication but it did not help and made me very tired.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Hiya

I haven't got OCD but I can imagine it is crippling at times. Have you ever tried Mindfulness? It takes some practice before it works but its worth the effort. I have a brief introduction to it, but you need to find a practitioner near you who can teach you it properly. Its not meditation as some people think, but a series of exercises which really help with thoughts going awry.

Here is the intro to it from the forum: How do I start practicing mindfulness? | Mental Health Forum

It is my understanding that ERP (Exposure Response Prevention) is the only treatment regimine that actually can make some progress on this disorder.

I have been doing ERP for a while now with my mental health professionals , it’s a very hard treatment in terms of facing your OCD head on and letting the anxiety come down itself without carrying out the tasks , as I said it’s very hard and I’ve only overcome a few small things and I’m now working on other things , it’s well worth a try , all the best

I have been diagnosed with OCD as well as anxiety etc and something that has helped me is saying in my head 'it doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be done' when I'm obsessing over doing something perfectly and therefore avoiding it. That one phrase has helped me a lot, I wrote it on a post it and put it on my noticeboard to remind me.

I also found exposure therapy with a therapist then continuing it myself has helped, as does recognising the OCD thoughts in my head. It's a difficult condition to manage because I find it tends to come back in waves and can get really bad before it retreats again, but continuing the techniques throughout helps.

I've also found volunteering as a gardener super helpful, being in nature and exercise as well as painting and journaling and hanging out with my cat as well as the usually self care like sleep, healthy food, showering, a routine and not giving myself a hard time.

What is it about cycling alone that worries you, is it encountering people, traffic etc or something else?

I agree with it coming and going in waves sometimes a bit easier than normal and others completely unmanageable I also find being out and being active helps me I feel when I’m out walking my mind seems to settle and relax a bit more , in regard to doing exposure therapy (ERP) mine was different I feel I couldn’t do it myself I needed someone to tell me I could do it so I suppose it’s different for each person , the best thing to do is speak to a professional and work on it so you can do the things you enjoy again , was nice to see the comment above , sometimes you feel your alone and seeing someone else doing ERP and how it’s working for them gives me a bit more motivation , all the best with your cycling
