So for years I've known I wasn't quite okay. Went the doctors alot and they always put it down to depression but the last few days I've been reading about bpd and seen the symptoms and triggers. I ticked all the boxes. I have got an appointment with my gp next week but hoping I don't get palmed off with depression again. Just wanted i know if it took anyone alot of time to get a diagnosis and what are the steps

Didn’t get my diagnosis until my late 40s. Even then my therapist didn’t want to give me the stigma associated with bpd (a lot of therapists will refuse to work with bpd because it can be challenging to treat).

She has a point though. Nobody is 100% bpd. There are usually other elements present like depression, or bipolar. Each has a different treatment.

Work with your therapist on the trauma and try to forget about the label. It doesn’t define you.

If you aren’t currently in therapy, that’s a place to start unravelling the disorder and helping you to feel more stable. You can’t do it alone.

Hi

I think its important to work out what it would mean to you if you were diagnosed with BPD. Some don’t like or want the label but if you think it will open up access to other therapies then its worth a go.

I would go through the symptoms then write down which ones you have with a bit of information showing how they manifest in you.

I was only diagnosed last Feb at 45 years old after really having the symptoms since I was a child. For me, it was the BPD traits that opened up the offer of DBT which I’ve done for the past 11 months and is amazing (and really hard work).

Good luck with it

I have recently been diagnosed with BPD. In the UK I saw a doctor who referred me to the NHS WellBeing Service for a telephone assessment with a Psychologist. Their initial advice was to give me the number of both Relate (for my relationship difficulties) and GambleAware (for my betting). To say I was unhappy was an understatement! I went back to the doctor who said I should self refer to them which I did. The next Psychologist obviously understood my difficulties better and referred me to the NHS Mental Health Team and I was interviewed by a Psychiatric Nurse. She couldn’t diagnose me but said her clinical diagnosis was BPD. I then went private and found myself a Psychologist who specialises in BPD and DBT Therapy. She confirmed the diagnosis and also told me I have several more disorders as well. Total elapsed time from first seeing the doctor, five months. Hope yours is quicker.
