Negative Spiritual Beliefs Associated with More Pain and Worse Physical, Mental Health - FailedMessiah.com

“In general, the more religious or spiritual you are, the healthier you are, which makes sense [because of reduced stress levels and greater sense of community and purpose]. But for some individuals, even if they have even the smallest degree of negative spirituality – basically, when individuals believe they’re ill because they’ve done something wrong and God is punishing them – their health is worse."

Individuals who blame karma for their poor health have more pain and worse physical and mental health, according to a new study from University of Missouri researchers. Targeted interventions to counteract negative spiritual beliefs could help some individuals decrease pain and improve their overall health, the researchers said.

“In general, the more religious or spiritual you are, the healthier you are, which makes sense,” said Brick Johnstone, a neuropsychologist and professor of health psychology in the MU School of Health Professions. “But for some individuals, even if they have even the smallest degree of negative spirituality – basically, when individuals believe they’re ill because they’ve done something wrong and God is punishing them – their health is worse.”

Johnstone and his colleagues studied nearly 200 individuals to find out how their spiritual beliefs affected their health outcomes. Individuals in the study had a range of health conditions, such as cancer, traumatic brain injury or chronic pain, and others were healthy. The researchers divided the individuals into two groups: a negative spirituality group that consisted of those who reported feeling abandoned or punished by a higher power, and a no negative spirituality group that consisted of people who didn’t feel abandoned or punished by a higher power. Participants answered questions about their emotional and physical health, including physical pain.

Very interesting - & what again is the solution in the context of mental illness?

i've longed for a deeper understanding from people & an opportunity to more deeply explore my experiences & psyche - it's Not & Never has been there. Largely i've had a lot of blame, judgement, attack & people don't understand.

What also in the case where there is negative spiritual experience(s)?

I'd imagine that a psychotherapist would have a field day with negative spiritual experiences, or a Jungian analyst. There should be acceptance, cooperative exploration and perhaps a path to a deeper understanding.

But I think a lot of people with severe negative spiritual tendencies would be just as well served by the biomedical / materialist model. I think the expectation of supernatural punishment creates the kind of conditions where these bad outcomes of mental and physical health become manifest, it's the mind over body effect that is so powerfully demonstrated in the placebo effect, but then in reverse.

It seems to be very possible to think onesself into illness if you cannot free yourself from persistent negative beliefs. In a way it doesn't really matter what belief system you end up in, as long as you let go of the negativity.

What if there are actual negative spiritual conditions - spirit attachment(s) - Actual karmic issues - etc.

If you are genuinely worried about actual negative spiritual influences, I think you have two possible routes to remedy that.

The first is that you can try to find those who can help you, a genuine spiritual healer or gifted psychic. Finding one among the fakes is not easy, it is a journey in itself. Then you have to let him or her treat you, and have enough trust in that treatment that you let go of your own mental image of the negative influence. It is only half the job if they work on your psychic self and you do not believe, or you cling to the negative. It's not so easy for someone from our western society to have that level of trust, it is a real exercise in letting go to surrender to the healing.

The second option is to undertake a spiritual cleansing of yourself. This can come in many forms, many people go to walk the camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage in Spain, and come back changed. Others dedicate themselves to a set spiritual practice, or to do good works. In the end it comes down to aligning yourself with good spiritual influences, and letting them cleanse you. It is also a quest and eventually a surrendering.

I think there is a requirement that you think you can be healed or cleansed, or faith that you will eventually be. It's important that you maintain that, because otherwise there is nowhere to go, no better state to be. The ego likes to hold onto suffering and victim hood, it makes you "special" but it is not healthy.

Have put a lot of time, work & effort into both those things - working with alternative/spiritual healers, training in healing & working on self healing for the past 14 years.

i have made a lot of progress.

i am however more inclined to agree with psychiatry & the areas i harp on about on here regarding people needing more comprehensive & understanding psychological/social support approaches. There are a number of ongoing difficulties & challenges. Case of plodding on with what i have been.
