Need to support son with depression

I have a son who is 41 years old he says he has suffered from depression since he was a child. I find it hard accepting this as he blames his childhood and everything he has gone through being involved with the psychiatric system here in the UK. I am attempting to support him as best i can. He does in fact say i should deal with my own life, however he is my only family member here where i live and i am somewhat dependent on him now i am reaching old age. I would appreciate anyone getting in touch who find they have a son or daughter who suffers with depression for support and to help understand this terrible condition better.

Can you find other support so that you aren't dependent on him? You can maybe find a way to be supportive of him and a part of his life and wellbeing without being dependent on each other. Wishing peace for you and your son.

Thank you Signofthetimes for your reassuring words and advice. Not being dependent when old and not being dependent when a child is just not the case. When he was dependent on me as a child i am afraid i wasn't around all of the time and i am pretty independent nowadays myself and so is he. If i had have had support from an early age then I would have been in a better position to raise my son and if i had been given the right kind of therapy when i was 17 then i wouldn't be on this platform today. There is no support from the mht. There are no peer support groups in my area. Like my son has often said the mht is rubbish and useless and all that psychiatry offers is labelling and toxic psychiatric medications.

I am realising today that there is no hope for me as an old person in a society that isolates old people and at best sends them to institutions or makes them a burden on members of their families saving the government millions for unpaid for care workers and it is in general a crazy world we live in.

People who are considered to have a mental illness when all that is wrong with them is that they have been emotionally wounded in their life are only blamed from what ails them. Psychiatric care is corrupt. Psychiatrists have sold out to the drug companies years ago. There is no support for the elderly except members of their family. There is no support for my son who struggles every day of his life just to survive in a world i really wish i had not brought him into.

I am sorry . My reply was insensitive. I think your son also has good memories from childhood as well. When depressed sometimes those get clouded or lost with the difficult ones. Your care and recognition of your son needing support have meaning. Thank you. Some people miss that, so that is huge. Your son is a blessing, even if he isn’t well and so are you.
Welcome to the forum. There are many kind and supportive people here.

Thank you Signofthetimes for those kind encouraging words. You are right we all have happy and bad memories. Some memories are made in the here and now and unfortunately that means isolation for some people. It seems there is no care in the community because society condemns those in a vulnerable position emotionally. You deviate from the herd and the herd tends to deal with you in a cruel way. It has been like this for decades. There are some ways of protecting yourself however and this is with contact with the right kind of people. Relationships are everything to human beings because we are sociable creatures and just contacting you on here has helped me today. Thank you!
