I've looked it up and it says it is used to treat bipolar and schizophrenia. He said he prescribed me it mostly to help with me sleep. took it tonight and it doesn't seem to be working for my sleep. Has anyone any experience with this medication? Is it it a mood stabilizer?

It's an antipsychotic and in my opinion, antipsychotics should never be used just for sleep. The side-effects vastly outweigh the benefit. Antipsychotics work by reducing "salience of information"; somnolence is just one side-effect.

Do you have bipolar or schizophrenia?

They're trying to figure out what i have. I do show some symptoms of schizophrenia but i show more symptoms of bipolar. Also show signs of Borderline personality disorder and i have social anxiety so it's pretty complex. I have a team now though that will be checking up on me everyday so they can get a diagnosis.

If you must take it, take the minimum possible dose. I have bipolar/schizoaffective myself and I take just 5 mg aripiprazole (another antipsychotic). I still have insomnia but I've learnt to live with it.

In terms of Abilify/Aripipazole, this is an alerting waking medication - no wonder you're having can't sleep problems.

Now I wouldn't recommend this not without supervision at any rate, I just happened to have been trialed on 20, 25ml, of Abillify, and it works miracles for me to get some form of decent night sleep, one tip, take in afternoons, forget about mornings, or evening times, afternoons always work best for me. Take anytime between 1 and 2, or 5pm, and you might find, your sleep routine improves - Good luck. I do realise that you are oly on 5mll.

On the Onlazapine front, that does suprise me, that one can't sleep, onlanzapine in my books was a rotten notorius, drug for causing , sleep problems big times, meaning, sleeping all day virtually, and feeling like a zombie afterwards.

Olanzapine made me very tired in the mornings, I wouldn't wake up until 10am or later after going to bed around 11pm. I think I was on 10-20mg at the time.

But the medication had side effects like having a huge endless appetite, so much so that I put on lots of weight and had to be taken off it.

I'm now on 10mg Aripiprazole in the morning and 4mg Risperidone at night, but the Risperidone doesn't make me as tired as the Olanzapine and I usually wake up between 8-9am now but I'm going to bed closer to midnight these days due to work.

Olanzapine made have such lethargy and I was pretty much zombified all the time. One thing I definitely noticed was insatiable appetite leading to significant weight gain.

Wow olanzapine really is a bit of a heavy weight medication for some.

Quetiapine however is now starting to be prescribed for sleep issues in some countries as the lower the dose of Quetiapine the higher the sedation.

25mg of Quetiapine knocked me out within 30 mins of taking it but as I went up through the dosage range finally reaching 800mg the sedation. Stopped.

This is understood to because at a low dose quetipine has high anti-histamine effect on the receptors in your brain and can induce sleep.

These qualities diminish as the dosage is increased.

There is a lot of controvacy in prescribing anti psychotics for sleep issues and you need to speak to your doctor about it. Or even get a second opinion from a specialist.

I have schizoaffective/bipolar and take Zyprexa. It doesn't really help me sleep anymore, it use to, been taking it for 2 years. I take 7.5mg but it's definitely not helping anymore. Just be careful with it, the side effects are nasty, especially if you drink alcohol while taking it (learned that the hard way)

I'm on 5mg now. What happened when you drank alcohol with it?
