Last year while in a manic state I quit my job and convinced my family to move across country, closer to family. No real planning involved. My current depressed state has been left to pick up the pieces and figure out how to put our lives back together. Not something I am really equipped to deal with given my current mental state. Actually it’s making my depression worse.

Spent most of my life misdiagnosed with depression/anxiety. Went through most pharma options with little or no effect. Finally, in my 50’s, my Dr. (new) diagnosed me with bipolar2. (4 months ago) It all makes sense now. What i thought was a breakout from my depression was actually a manic state. Full of euphoria i would do some crazy things. Like go buy a new car when i previously had no notion, desire, or need to do so. Then when my depressed state came back, I would beat myself up for doing something so careless. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Hopefully now with a proper diagnosis i can get the proper treatment i need.
Unfortunately Abilify didnt work for me and I am now on Lamotrigine. Have any of you had any luck with Lamotrigine? Are there any other meds i should ask my Dr about?

New to the community here and looking forward to contributing where i can!

First off, it is a great first step to get a proper diagnosis. The behavior you described certainly seems like bipolar (mania/depression). Yes, with that proper diagnosis, you can then get proper treatment. Getting proper treatment will go a long way in keeping you stable.

I have heard really good things about Lamotrigine. It is a great mood stabilizer for people who is bipolar 2 and most effective at keeping depression at bay. However, it is questionable how effective it is to treat mania. Many people on Lamotrigine also take some other med like an antipsychotic to deal with mania. Abilify is a well known antipsychotic but if it doesn't work for you then perhaps you can ask your doctor for another one to try. Good luck!

Abilify is more geared towards the higher end of things: mania, mixed states, psychosis. It isn't good for dealing with acute depression. I'm assuming this is why it didn't work for you?

Lamotrigine, as Keith says, is more geared towards prevention, a good 'maintenance' drug: it isn't good for dealing with acute depression or mania but it seems to work well for most with a more depression dominated Bipolar presentation, or Bipolar 2 in old money.

Mania is a feature of Bipolar 1, not Bipolar 2, so either they have it wrong and that needs to be kept an eye on all round, or you experienced Hypomania's that cost you a lot. Although the impact on your life makes it sound more like Mania, there's no real way for us to know for obvious reasons.

Thanks! I believe i am on the Lamotrigine because i spend most of my time in a depressed state. At least that’s what my dr told me. Not sure if/what else he plans to add. Hopefully we find something that works soon.

Lamotrigine kept me in a severely depressed state, but I am usually high with only a few short and horrible depressive states here and there, so probably wasn't the drug for me. I have heard really good things about it for other people though.

Sorry it didnt work for you. I wish i spent less time in a depressive state, but it is what it is. Praying the Lamotrigine works out.

Abilify didn't work with me either. I am on Lamotrigine and it works well in keeping my moods steady. Zyprexa is my miracle drug for me although it has significant weight issues.

Yes, Lamotrigine should be a good fit for you since you tend to deal with depression more (hence the bipolar 2 diagnosis). But as mentioned before, make sure you talk to your doctor regarding something for the (hypo)mania also

Abilify made me fatigued all the time and the weight gain was significant. I will look into Zyprexa along with a few others. thanks!

Abilify gave me the jitters -- made me extremely restless. Apparently, it has a reputation for that. After two weeks or so I just couldn't take it anymore and got off it. It took a while but I'm finally over it. However, it sounds like it works just fine for others.

Risperdal is my miracle drug along with Lamictal. Both keep me at an even keel for the most part.
