My 70 year old grandmom is having her first serious, breath-taking, anxiety attack (shocking as it may be). I say this because she woke me out of my sleep to say four words shes never expressed, ever. "I dont feel good!"... And she said it, while panting and having a hard time breathing. She is of course still a smoker, which could certainly be an issue 70 years of smoking.
She decided to try and lay back down after i talked to her. So i dont think its a hospital emergency, for now.
The point im making with her anxiety 'attack' history is that - shes never experienced one!... Her entire life has put a prominent role in burying her emotional problems, and staying "tough" throughout every situation. But likewise, shes also buried significant information throughout us sharing our deepest dilemmas; Meaning, she has never admitted to having a genuine mental/physical break down - not being able to breathe - because've the uncomfortable, unfortunate extreme anxiety-case. So its almost 2:30. Half hour later, she calmed down a little. I told her, out of instinct, to focus on her breathing. To make sure shes getting one breath in... And then one breath out...
I know it could be hard to understand how someone with so much experience never encountered the chaos of anxiety disorder first hand, but like i said, she has expressed to me reasons that make me think this. My Mother's first extreme anxiety was only 4 or 5 years ago, as was mine... Of course you never know whats happening- when its happening, and i know my grandmom has become increasingly concerned with my Mom (her daughter's) bizarre, in-&-out of the house, activity... ... So back to the main page here...
If anyone else has even an inkling of experience with grandparents and their 'breathing/not feeling well' types of dilemmas, let me know. Ive unfortunately never dealt with guiding someone, especially of older age, whether it is only anxiety versus something more serious... But i think she would be calling the hospital if that had been the case. Thank you.
