9pm, Mara, Horror Channel. Sophie wakes up, hears scary noises from her parents' bedroom and sees her dad dead. A psychologist arrives there to determine what happened.

10pm, Tulip Fever (2017), BBC 2. In 17th century Amsterdam, an orphaned girl Sophia is forcibly married to a rich and powerful merchant Cornelis Sandvoort - an unhappy arrangement that saves her from poverty. After her husband commissions a portrait, she begins an obsessive passionate affair with the painter Jan Van Loos, a struggling young artist. Seeking to escape the merchant's ever-reaching grasp, the lovers risk everything and enter the frenzied tulip bulb financial market, with the hope that the right bulb will make a fortune and buy their freedom.

The saga which pretty much explains every Financial `bubble' to this day;

Some tulip flowers (particular colours) from an overall grown batch were more favoured than others, so could be sold for more money than the others.

Then someone had a `good' idea - for the next batch JUST plant the seeds of the expensive ones and plant no seeds of the cheap ones - that way ONLY the very profitable ones will grow - and LOTS of them.

And everybody else thought it was a good idea too, and all invested heavily in the idea (including lots of people just putting money into the idea) - seeing the `obvious' big profits that would come from it.

But when all the new tulips then grew - they were somehow just in the SAME ratio of overall colours as the previous planted batches! The colour of the tulips that the seeds came from turned out to be irrelevant to the colour they produced when grown.

Nobody had actually checked the genetics first and had just used logic - because checking the genetics (by waiting for the next batch of tulips to grow first to actually see what they looked like before investing money) risking missing out on the big profits that earlier investors would get otherwise if the scheme worked and it seemed obvious that it would.

11pm, Louis Theroux: My Scientology Movie, W channel. The reporter investigates the controversial religious organisation, but finds himself denied access to anyone involved. Adopting a different approach, he resorts to recruiting actors to re-enact the personal stories of former members - only to find his project is under surveillance by representatives of the church.

9pm, The Violence Paradox, BBC 4. The psychologist Steven Pinker journeys through history and the human mind to explore what triggers violence and how it may have decreased over time.
