Mental health staff in the UK are working in a "powder keg" environment, as assaults by patients soar. Figures show there were more than 42,000 reported attacks on staff in 2016-17 in the mental health trusts who responded. The figure is more than a quarter higher than for the corresponding trusts four years earlier - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-41514011

An autistic schoolboy was barred from a trampoline centre – for wearing the wrong kind of socks. Tyler Jones was told he could not take part in a session at Flip Out Sandwell unless he wore the socks handed out by staff. The ten-year-old was refused permission to wear his own trampoline socks – and then left without jumping after having a “meltdown” over putting on the attraction’s footwear. It happened during a session designed especially to cater for children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) - http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/autistic-schoolboy-barred-trampoling-over-13717982

Mental Health Sunflower Afternoons Clinics

6 July 2017 - 26 December 2019

Fee: FREE

Venue: As-Suffa Institute, 156 High Street, Aston, Birmingham B6 4UX

(High Street in Aston is a weird stretch of road probably not even known to many locals. Birchfield Rd on the A34 doesn't actually lead straight to Newtown Row A34 as most people seem to think - a short stretch in between by Newtown Swimming Baths and The Bartons Arms pub is called High Street on the A34 - there. The confusion is probably because Newtown Shopping Centre is right there too and not on Newtown Row A34 a few hundred yards down)

Open to: All Welcome
Recurring Days: Every Thursdays
Recurring Time: 1pm - 3pm

More Information: As-Suffa Outreach in partnership with Birmingham Mind welcomes you to our ’Sunflower Afternoons’. Come along to our weekly FREE Sunshine Sessions where you can get help on different areas of mental health. Whether its advice and information or help with housing and debt, our experienced support workers will be more than willing to help.

Birmingham Mind provides high quality services in a variety of settings. All the services are carefully vetted by Birmingham Mind’s own monitoring arrangements or external verification. They provide person centred support to enable people to be in control of their lives.

Birmingham Mind are by far the largest voluntary sector provider of mental health services within Birmingham and as a consequence have a vast amount of experience within the organisation.

Their vision is that people are in control of their lives and this aspiration emphasises the need to build upon peoples strengths underpinned at all times by a well established recovery approach.

ARTS ALL OVER THE PLACE presents SURVIVING OR THRIVING? - Interactive Arts In Health Festival

Taking place on : 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th October @ Mac Theatre, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham B12 9QH

By working with YOU, we can tackle the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Our aim is to bring people together to experience and enjoy a series of exciting and meaningful events, this includes an interactive arts exhibition, workshops and performances. There will be opportunities to share our best practice together and continue to show the positive impact that creativity has on all of our mental well-being! Following on from the theme of Mental Health Awareness Week, we will look at mental health from a new angle. Rather than ask why so many people are living with mental health problems, we will seek to uncover why too few of us are thriving with good mental health. With people struggling to cope with the demands of life and stuck on getting through the day, we will explore how many of us are surviving or thriving, and the difference between the two.

In its 10th year, AAOTP celebrates the creative talents of those who have or have had mental health problems across all aspects of the Arts, and promotes the value of the Arts in Mental Health recovery. It gives free exhibition space to people who might otherwise have no opportunity to showcase their talent, and provides free workshops during the event for people to experience a huge variety of Art forms. It also provides information and interactive pop-up events about mental health to the public and acts as a way of reducing the stigma and discrimination many people with mental health problems face.

At the Mac in Birmingham there is a car park but from 1st October there will be charges up to 4 hours £2 up to 12 hours £3.

Due to limited space we can only accept art submissions no larger than 60cm x 60cm cm measurement, otherwise we regret that we will not be able to include your work. If this is an issue then please get in touch by email and we will do what we can to help. Please note that it is essential that you or a nominated person must be able to collect your work on Tuesday 10th October from 3pm - 6pm @ Mac Birmingham as we have no storage facilities to keep any arts works. CALL-OUT FOR POETRY

Poems should fit one page of A4 (possibly in 2 columns) or we may just print an extract. Any poems displayed or printed remain the property of the poet. Please add your name or a pseudonym or tell us if you do not want your name included. We regret that we cannot include images in the booklet of poems. All poets whose work is included in the booklet will be entitled to a free copy after the festival.

For any further information about volunteering or anything else then please contact - [email protected]

Pink Therapy's Sixth Annual Conference - The Intersection Of Mental Health And Sexuality Professionals

When - Friday March 23rd 2018 at 9:30AM to Saturday March 24th 2018 at 5PM

Resource for London, 356 Holloway Road, London N7 6PA

This year we are tackling two controversial and yet linked subjects under the heading of 'Sex Work'. The first is that we're aiming to improve mental health support for people who sell sex in various roles within the 'sex industry' who have quite frequently received appalling treatment from therapists. The second is that some 'talk therapists' have been drawn to explore and retrain in other ways to work with people, using the body and sometimes touch. Sexological Bodywork, Somatic Sexology, Tantra, Sex Coaching and many other models which offer other, more direct ways to help people.

N.B. The focus for the conference is on Counsellors & Psychotherapists learning more about sex work and somatic body-work. If space permits nearer the time, we will open up the conference to sexological body-workers and allied professionals. Email us for notification of when we do this: [email protected]

Early Bird registration is £150 single day/£250 both days until 20 Dec 2016.Full fee from 21 Dec 2016 is £160 single day/£310 both days.

Therapy students and therapists-in-training are welcome to register; however, there are currently no student bursaries available. We may release some discounted places nearer the time if space permits.
