I imagine if you lived in a close community setting, you would simply speak to a wise person, friends or family about your emotional concerns and gain guidance and support from others. Instead of being cut off from natural social processes and relying on doctors.
It's probably a romantic view that still doesn't happen in small community settings either.
Like people with schizophrenia being tied to a tree or locked in a cage.
Or maybe just being outcast from the community unit for being different.

It's actually very common in India, in some communes & other spiritual communities.

One person suggested i go to a certain area/ashram in India for 3 years - & stop the medication. Someone else suggested the same with Osho Leela in the UK (they would be more likely to get services involved if i went totally psychotic).

i have a friend who has gone down this road - she spends most of the year in India.

Think it's more the question of how well these things are going to work, rather than the option of doing it.

How well it is going to work is a bit of a tough question... Very dependent on the individual, how much they need the medicine, how much they buy into the new environment and let it support them, and so on.

But I think a period of commune living in general is beneficial to anyone, it shows you a very different way of life than the standard westernised society, especially if you can feel at one with the purposes of the commune. If you just go and holiday there, it won't have a deep effect. If you drink the cool-aid and really get involved, commit yourself, you will end up feeling much more at one with the people and community, and that can be a wonderful thing.

Whether that can function as a cure, I don't know. Maybe for some people it's exactly what the doctor ordered, a new family and a chance to start over. Others might be better off sticking to the meds.
