Hello,

I’ve been suffering with anxiety and panic attacks for a number of years, however I got my panic attacks under control around 3 years ago due to CBT until recently they have came back and my anxiety has increased dramatically to the point we’re i can’t function as normal, I’m just about getting to and from work but don’t feel I can do much more at the moment which is frustrating as I always like to be going out with friends and doing activities as such. I’m due to see my doctor next week and I have never tried medication before but I am considering taking some if it is offered because I just want to be better at this point, has anyone been in a similar position we’re they were unsure about medication but it has helped or what are the pro’s and cons of taking medication for anxiety?

Thanks for any replies :)

I've never been hesitant to take meds, i've just been so desperate that i'd try anything!
But I did want to reply and say that medication has helped my anxiety.

I'd say that the pros are feeling better but the cons are that some meds have side effects.
I can remember the first week or two of a new medication made me feel very strange (which didn't help my anxiety much!). But things eventually settled and got better.

Try an SSRI med to start off with, something like Citalopram you can take a little amount just to take the edge off your anxiety

Hey, I was also reluctant to take meds at first. I've been on setraline (SSRI) for about a month now and I have to say it has made a difference. I still get a lot of physical symptoms but my mental symptoms have definitely been reduced.

The only side effect I've experienced is a dry mouth, and maybe a little tiredness. I think if your anxiety is seriously affecting you it's definitely worth asking your doctor about it. He/she will know what to do

Hope I helped :)

There's still a massive stigma around taking meds, but when someone gets a headache it's the first thing you reach for.

25 years ago, I was completely against taking meds, but got to the point where I would try anything. I was truly desperate. Don't let that happen to you. Meds have come quite a way since then. I have anxiety, MDD, and PTSD and can't function without at least a few of the meds I'm on. I've changed many times, as you can imagine. The best thing is to be open to trying different ones, but learning as much as you can about each one available to you. Try to be your own advocate, don't the medical community walk all over you. Best of luck.

Anxiety is terrible and I get how bad you feel. Before you go for long term medication (which I am not against) then think about how this anxiety does affect you. It seems that it's affecting you a lot if you're feeling that you're only getting to work and back. That's hard. A lengthy talk with your doctor is needed. Could a small dose of diazepam help with these journeys until it becomes normal to make them? It could be. If not, then something longer is required.
