Hi. I have my Psych appt on Tuesday, so just trying to prepare. All my life I have been mostly hypomanic, but have very speedy and hideous lows that are usually just a few days, maybe a week, but very bad. This last year has been very different for numerous reasons, so mostly I have done the opposite. I'm under quite a lot of stress currently with my younger child self harming and being quite difficult to live with. This means I have a lot of involvement with School, children's services and now Camhs, which I find intrusive and very stressful, but doing all I can to help my child through it, so have sought this out and have ended up coordinating it.

I have been way too high for about 3 months now, mostly because of the stress, I think. Just on Pregabalin, which isn't doing anything so far as I can see. And diazapam to help me calm down, which has got rid of the flappyness physically. I have been in crisis a number of times, but always managed to pull it back so far. Have had a weekend without my younger child, but had my Son with me and I feel so much calmer and stronger, really needed the break. I am going to make sure I get these breaks before crisis point hits again, I hope.

Lamotrigine made me too depressed, Quetiapine too anxious and not able to sleep. Vortioxetine made me high and all the mini calming things, like Lorazepam, did nothing. I need something to balance my bipolar, but only because of the stress I am under. I think if it weren't for the high level stress, I would probably be ok unmedicated, but I can't change the situation at the moment. I can't afford to get depressed again and can't maintain this high, it's exhausting. Also, would like to lose weight, certainly not put any more on. Any ideas what I should be suggesting to the Psychiatrist that he may not offer straightaway to me?

I hear you CabbageMama
I am currently under a lot of stress and I’m cycling up and down because of it.
Have you tried Tegretol?
It’s not a big weight gaining drug and it’s pretty good for the highs and to some extent the lows.

Good luck with your psych appointment

Hi, CabbageMama, glad you're hanging in there.

I've tried a lot of stabilizers and had unusual luck with Depakote. It's a weight-gainer, but whether you get that side effect is supposed to be dose dependent. I haven't had that side effect in the ~4 years I've been on it and I take 2500 mg a day, but I know other people who have put on weight. It smooths me out and suppresses my hypomania, but I still have my creativity and feelings. My doc says it works fast (or doesn't), so you can tell fairly quickly if it's a good choice. I felt something the first day and reduced my benzo (Xanax) within 3 or 4 weeks. Lamotrigine gives me headaches and my kidneys can't take Lithium, so I feel lucky that Depakote worked.

I am scared of antipsychotics (terrified of TD), but it seems like a lot of people around here like Quetiapine. I've refused it when offered, but maybe it would be OK for a short while.

I started Lyrica shortly after you did and love it, but it doesn't have the same effects that Depakote does. I need them both.

Feel better!

I have depakote and tegretol to research today. Thank you. X

I'd love to know what your psychiatrist recommended/prescribed. Did your appointment go well? Any news?

He said my bipolar has flared as a result of the stress I am under. He didn’t want to prescribe anything new while things were still so difficult, due to my adverse/paradoxical responses. So I am upping the Pregabalin to 200mg twice a day, then 300mg twice a day. Unlicensed for bipolar, but he has a few patients like me for whom it has worked. I get a Peer support worker and am meant to take better care of myself and put my own needs first more...

I hope the Pregabalin increase helps. It started working pretty fast when I began taking it. Please do something nice for yourself since the doc seems to have prescribed that, too.

Just take benzos for life. It’s a miracle drug.
They have given me diazapam for when needed, which helps when I am really flapping around and bonkers. Aim not to get to that stage though! My 12 year old has moved in with my Mum for the last week, which while upsetting and hurtful, has given me a much needed break from the stress and I feel much stronger and more capable.

I'm glad you've given yourself permission to let your 12 year old stay with your Mum. The stress of family tension pushes my manic, depressive, or both buttons more than anything else. Next: how about another massage?

The Diazepam is great to have in your pocket for emergencies, isn't it? My low dose benzo still works after 10 or 15 years (most of the time).

The only good thing about Diazepam is that it helps you sleep when you really can't but need to. Anyone seeing it as more than that is in for a world of torment in the coming years. Use it as a crutch, as needed, and it will help, but no more than that.

Booked in for another massage already. Only use the diazepam for especially difficult days, weirdly, it doesn't make me sleep. Feel really down today, but have met a friend for breakfast and going to see my Mum for a bit of company. Not sure if it is a bipolar down, am well overdue one, or just because of what's been happening, but either way, my bad thoughts spiral when I am on my own.
