Hey this is a bit embarrassing, but has anyone here happened to have any experience with severely matted hair? I haven’t brushed or washed my hair in nearly six months due mainly to my depression and now it is quite tangled up. I’m not totally against just cutting it off and letting it grow back again, but I’d prefer to have it untangled so I can keep it long.

So in short I have two questions.
1. Would any hairstylists be willing to untangle it for me if I paid them for it? I’d do it myself, but I’m scared I’d mess up and break it or do more damage which is the last thing I need so I’d prefer to have it in hands I can trust.

2. Have anyone else here neglected brushing their hair or any other basic hygiene such as brushing teeth, showering , shaving etc etc

I’ve heard bad hygiene is considered a symptom of depression for some so I am curious to see your responses.

During my worst depression I would realize I hadn't bathed in a few days because I would notice my arm pit and leg hair was unshaved. The days kind of blended together. I slept a lot and my room was dark. I didn't know what day it was. I definitely wasn't washing my hair and it turned to a greasy mess. It would touch my face and give me pimples. I finally washed my hair and felt like ten pounds were lifted from my head!

Have you ever thought of dreads? This is where you intentional grow your hair into a tangle and jsut keep twisting it up. Just an idea. I have matted hair from not brushing I use cream rinse in it as I brush it out.

I lost all my hair as a young man, so I don't have any particular advice apart from if you desire to keep the hair you have, you are going to need the assistance of someone who really knows how to deal with these conditions. If you want to keep it a private affair, I'm guessing if you were to cut it, it will grow back fairly soon. A year or two, let's say. Meanwhile, cutting your unkempt hair will definitely send a strong message to those around you that you are ready to confront immediate change.

Just my thoughts. I wish you the best in your endeavors, no matter what you choose to pursue.

Hey Fairy. I was wondering if I could have your permission to PM you? I was going to message you in private to maybe chat about the topic of this thread, but it wouldn’t allow me to send you a message.

I dont know how matted you mean do you think a conditioner liberally used 2/3rds up (not roots) might do it? Straight onto dry hair.
Do you know a mobile hairdresser? you may feel more comfortable at home.
