Does anyone ever feel like they were misdiagnosed or during a time when it was profitable to diagnose encouragable kids? I mean everyone has ups and downs. My friend told me when he got diagnosed he was just level and never had mood swings. They just made him say his name and his diagnosis at age 8, which was called manic depressive, now bipolar. When he explained it, it sounded like Brainwashing and not treatment. Idk, just curious if anyone feels like he does.

I'm diagnosed as Bipolar-NOS too. And I'm not sure about the diagnosis. Sometimes I get these weird boosts of energy and excitement and sometimes I'm just very exhausted the whole day. Not sure if that's bipolar.

I think "not otherwise specified" in the diagnosis basically means "for a lack of a better diagnosis" lol

Initially I was diagnosed schizoaffective, but I don’t know why, I was not hearing voices (just that critical voice in my own head), I had an obvious mania followed by a deep and long depression, then I was diagnosed bipolar 2. That seems to fit all the symptoms.

I'm not comfortable with the idea of diagnosing kids like that. There's so much going on I honestly don't know how they could possibly pin it down to Bipolar. There are so many 'adult' things you do that I struggle to think of a kid version that could lead to a diagnosis. And knowing that a diagnosis means medication - no, I don't like the idea of that at all. I remember seeing the kids in the Stephen Fry documentary and they had so many pills to take every day it was ridiculous - overkill beyond overkill. And they both looked like zombies too.

The misdiagnosis thing is most certainly a problem and it happens too often for sure. I reckon when you've got this thing though you kinda begrudgingly accept, or know, that you have. For example, up until a couple of weeks ago I was severely depressed and had been for about 7 weeks. In the last week or two I've ramped right back up to an energetic and productive level, although definitely not Hypo or Manic. That shift in mood is not a normal shift. I know that, it's somewhat easy to see once the fog has lifted. The problem is on the other end of the scale though because the Hypo and Mania is far more blinding because you can't see that as clearly when you're in one and even sometimes afterwards. And it's this end of the scale that is the real clincher for the diagnosis so...you kinda have to take what docs say as Gospel. And if meds improve things then you feel more comfortable that it's the right one.
