Hi Everyone I’m Emily, I’m 21 years old living in USA. I don’t have any friends in real life. I feel so miserable and lonely all the time. I really just need someone to talk too. Anybody here wants to be my friend??

Hello and welcome to the forums!

I'd be happy to have a little chat while you find a friend or two, I'm male, 39 from the UK so I probably won't be able to relate to a lot of your issues in life but I do have social anxiety or at least used to until I started medication for it a few years ago, now I'm getting better and pushing myself to socialise all the time.

I didn't even realise it was called social anxiety and could really be treated until around 2016, all the time I just thought I was shy as that was what I'd been told when I was really young, "oh, he's shy" etc...

But looking back it was much more than that, sweating a lot and going red in the face when talking to people (women especially) and their attention was all on me. There was also a full body feeling that is hard to describe, a tensing or tightening up.

I also have trouble thinking what to say to people, I'm a naturally quiet person (unless you get me talking about mental health it seems) with not much to say about anything. I live a pretty dull and boring life and nobody wants to hear what I get up to or at least that's what I think. I have one good friend and there's his family as well that I visit a few times a week but even then I say what I've saved up which lasts about 10 minutes at best then I spend the next few hours just sat there watching TV with him in sporadic conversation when it's about what's on the telly.

How does your social anxiety manifest and how does it effect your daily life?

Hi, I’m a pretty quiet person too. Because of my social anxiety I have a hard time having conversation with people so I never really say much. Right now I just have a part time job and I just spend most of my free time home doing stuff alone. I dropped out of college partly because of social anxiety. I would like trying to attend school again in the future. But I hard time accomplishing anything I want to do in life. Im scared that I’ll never get my dream job or have meaningful relationships with anyone. I feel like I’m wasting my life away because my anxiety prevents me from living my life the way I want to. Do you ever feel that?

I get that all the time. I've been single for the past 20 years and unemployed for most of that time too, goodness knows how I managed to get the few jobs I did and have relations with women or anyone else for that matter.

Hi Emily,
things can get better for you. Definitely try not to be too hard on yourself and take things one step at a time.
