Hello. My 17 year old son is suffering terribly from tics at the moment. The only time he stops ticking is from 11pm until about 3am when I hear him again. If I go anywhere near him he screams at me to go away and that I make it worse. His tics are very loud and sometimes screams. He already sees a psychologist but it's not helping much. He's seeing a psychiatrist on Fri. which is a week away and a neurologist on the 15 of June. Hard to find help and someone willing to help my son right away do to covid. I'm looking to see if others have had this and if it gets better with age. Also what may have helped. CBT isn't working for him. I need something...this is absolutely killing me...he cries often. Thank you for any help.

Hi JimmyJim, I’m very sorry to hear that your son is suffering. You obviously love him very much.

I know it sounds far, but he will soon receive all the help that he needs. In the meantime, all you can do is try to be there for him, try to ease his pain and respect that he might need more space that it is confortable for you to give.

Your son is the only one who knows what is helping and what is making him worse, so try to learn what are his triggers. If he doesn’t want to have you around, try to communicate by phone, text, letter or e-mails. It might be easier for him to talk to you that way.

Tics are usually a result of an hyperactive body or mind. Since both are closely bound to one another, anything relaxing can help him out: music, comedy, physical activities, massage, meditation, yoga, puzzles, drawing (mandala).

The situation your in won‘t resolve over night, that’s why I highly suggest you get help for yourself as well. There is group support for family members of people suffering mental health problems. It’s free and confidential. You won’t be able to help your son if you don’t take care of your own wellbeing.

The last thing I can suggest is to talk to your son about this forum. I’m sure his feeling pretty lonely at the moment and finding someplace to vent might do him some good.

Good luck with your son, I hope he’ll feel better soon

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I really appreciate it. I'm trying to get him to break up the day with other activities but he just wont do it. Texting worked today, just had to remind him to reply a couple times. Thanks again.

Don’t worry about him not wanting to do anything. Most person with mental health issues, myself included, don’t want to do anything at first. Unfortunately, as with any other medical issue, pain is part of the healing process and the process can’t go faster than the patient.

When someone is drowning, you don’t tell them to swim, you bring them something to float.

Bring your boy some comfort food, a cup of cocoa, send him a joke, bring him an animal plush, light a candle, and if he needs to cry, then let him cry.

Btw, it will most likely get better with age. No matter what the issue is, you eventually find the right medication, therapy and/or coping mechanism for you. You just need to be patient.

Thank you Jazzmine84. He seems to be getting worse now. He's been on Guanfacine 2mg a day and Seroquel @ 25 mg for a little less than a week. He takes them at night, but doesn't want to. Says it's not doing anything. Why is this happening at 17? Everything that I read says it get's better as they age, but his tics are complex and never give him a break all day. He just says he want to die and screams. Throat clearing is incredibly loud. Thanks for listening.
