Hi,

I have Cyclothymia, it's getting really hard to deal with, but I'm holding on.

I recently got a Lithium concentration blood test, and it says it's >0.1 mmol/l, while the normal therapeutic range is 0.6-1.2 mmol/l

I haven't said anything to my psychiatrist yet, but has anyone had their Lithium levels as low as this? I've been feeling suicidal more often than usual and maybe this is why?

It's just so weird that my Lithium level is so so low, I can't find anything about this on the internet, so I thought I'd turn here.

Sorry if this thread is inappropriate or has been made before, I couldn't find anything similar here.

> actually stands for greater than. So, the test states that your lithium level is greater than 0.1, which could even be between 0.6 and 1.2.

Range is 0.5-.08 where I am in the UK, I've always been 0.5

0.1 isn't really gonna be doing anything as it's way below range, I'd recommend calling your pdoc up. My GP surgery normally calls me if under range has yours not even called you?

Do you even take lithium? If so, what's your dosage?
Yes, for the last year I have been taking two 450mg tablets per day, now my psychiatrist told me to take three tablets instead until I get the results of the blood test (which I got today)

I haven't contacted her yet because she's on vacation until 20th of April

Thanks for the reply, I will call my psychiatrist as soon as she's off her vacation.

Just thought what time did you take the blood test? It has to be 12 hours after the last dose, no more than 13 hours.

If you exceeded this and took it later in the day this would then explain why it was so low, as if you've gone from taking 900mg to 1350mg and it to come up 0.1 doesn't sound right. You can call the pdoc secretary rather than waiting so long (I assume you mean mid june) as there should still be someone like a locum covering if a pdoc is off!

Oh shoot, I took a couple of tablets before the test... Didn't even think of that! I will have to retake the test most likely because the results might actually be inaccurate.

I actually meant 20th of May, my mistake! So it's just three more days, I can wait that long.

Thank you for clearing things up for me Zusy, I appreciate it.

Just a shame that the nurse who took the test didn't even bother to let me know I shouldn't take Lithium before the test... Oh well, stuff happens!

My levels were 1.1 so they lowered my dose. It is now sitting at. 0.8. I tend not to drink enough fluids which then pushes up my levels.

I take my lithium at 10.30 at night and have my levels checked at 10.30 in the morning. That way they can get an accurate test.

I take 900mg in the evening and my level is about 0.75. 0.1 sounds unbelievable with such dosage. Eating and drinking affects the level. I had lithium toxicacy (1.75) when I was so depressed I stopped eating and drinking.
