Very much the textbook orthodox response. He seems almost robotic.

IMHO -

A few thoughts - No psychiatrist is in my opinion qualified as to the nature of "reality" or the nature of existence. What he is talking about is "objective" "consensus reality". Any in depth look into spiritual experience, philosophy, religion, & other paradigms - shows that reality is not so simplistic; & that "subjective" reality often has a very strong case for being far more in line with "truth". - The problem is again that orthodox psychiatry sets the ground rules or framework - & if your experience differs then it is delusion - or you are experiencing nonsense. When in fact there is often very real psychological/spiritual factors for what someone may be experiencing, & a profound meaning to their experiences.

Q. "Have you had a psychologist, social worker, psychiatric nurse or doctor on the ward who stood out as a good worker? Did they do something and have a particular personal quality which appealed to you."

Just one psychiatrist, he listened to what i said and based his decisions on what i said. All the rest just presumed to know everything whilst understanding nothing. So i would say professionals who show positive regard and don't
presume to understand things outside of there personal experience.
This psychiatrist is unaware of where the idea of "spilt" or multiple personality disorder comes from in relation to Schizophrenia. It is from the "Split" within the mind or the "psychotic" state between "reality" (Objective/physical/consensus) with the the "unreal"/Altered state, or more meaningfully between the ego self & the unconscious. The dissolution of the ego & a falling into the unconscious mind; or another way of saying it - an overwhelming of the conscious mind by the the content of the unconscious.

In relation to ego death & the role of "Schizophrenia" within society & evolution - there is a theorised reason for it's existence. Primarily within Indigenous cultures the ASC's of "Schizophrenia" are more commonly associated with the Shamanistic; with the wounded Healer; & those afflicted are more commonly revered as people in contact with other realms (the underworld &/or the Divine), & as having access to other aspects of reality for the development of the social group (i.e. Commonly a Shamanic Healer). When those so "afflicted" with ASC's are responded to within the context of a wider & deeper meaning & such states are embraced & responded to as having an important role within the social structure - then the reaction of the "sufferer" is totally changed. When reacted to as extreme illness as in the West - the psychotic person will respond accordingly. In this regard there are theories that "Schizophrenia" or ASC's are integral & critical to the development of mankind.

He raised an interesting point at the end of the video with the theories surrounding the early brain development of the "Schizophrenic" with a cutting back of the connections to certain parts of the mind & an over development of other deeper part of the brain. This reiterates the point - Who is qualified to state what is reality/the nature of reality; or who is more in line with sanity than madness? The "True" nature of reality is as yet unknown. Personally I see that the materialistic, Bio Chemical, scientific reductionist, Disease model in relation to Schizophrenia is as much, if not the whole problem in relation to these altered states. Of course mental illness exists; & we have a long way to go in our understandings of such things. But I would think that it would be far more helpful if the Mystery of such states was more openly acknowledged by the orthodox, rather than this assumption of "them" knowing what they are talking about - when quite plainly they don't.

But still; it is good that people do talk about such things to open debate & anything which promotes a slightly deeper understanding & perspective on mental illness is a good thing. Instead of the "oh they're a Nutter mentality", which is so rife within our communities.

I feel better for waffling on about the way I see it. Thanks for the Vid link - it certainly stimulated my mind into a response.

I prefer the second Vid BlueMonday - Because it's from the perspective of a MH "user" & concerned with Recovery & the reality of living a meaningful & productive life irregardless of a severe mental illness. :)
