Is spending time in a hospital psyciatric unit a good way to help?

I suffer from depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts, I am currently under the home treatment team, but I need to know, my parents are miserable, I am miserable, is a stay in hospital a good way to help fight my demons? I understand it is not the be all and end all, I also have a job, but if anybody could share any UK based experiences, I would appreciate it.

I have a friend who has similar issues, and she is currently staying at an inpatient facility not so far away. It is a 2-4 week stay intended to give her some breathing room away from her new home after a suicide attempt, she was just divorced by her husband and has moved out.

From what I hear from her, she is finding it beneficial to take a break, be away from a stressful environment for a little while as she tries to come to terms with things. But the doctors here have said, it's a good thing to go back every two weeks or so so that you don't lose touch entirely, and no inpatient stay longer than four weeks because she needs to be able to adjust to and function in her new environment.

So my guess is, it may help a little, relieving the pressure in the short term and giving you some new coping techniques. But in the long term you still need to function as normal, and you'll want to think about the impact on your job and things.

I had exactly the same mental health issues, and found a break in hospital very beneficial. Although some patients were very ill, most were friendly and able to chat. Nurses were also available to chat to if you became very anxious. They were also able to review my medication and monitor me on a new one. When I was discharged I spent some time as a Day Patient where I spent all day at the hospital and slept at home.

I am in the US but I thought I'd put my experience out there.

I found that my stay in the psych ward of my local hospital was a bit of a help and a hurt at the same time. I found it helpful that I was able to get put on medications and up to a higher dose rapidly as they are able to watch you closely for side effects. I also made a very good friend while there. However, one of my issues is that when I am having a panic attack or severe depression the only way for me to calm down is for me to have physical contact such as a hug or someone to hold my hand. In the psych ward there is a very strict "no contact" policy that ended up making my issues worse while they were occurring.

I have been in and out of hopsital the past year in the UK. It has helped me deal with my emotions a little better, however when in hospital you are in a relaxed and not stressful environment, it is nothing like real life. So when you finally leave real life really hits you hard and so do all the stresses that come with it. I would say there are good and bad things about hospitals and the decision is completely personal.

Hi,
My hospital stay was terrible, patients had fights daily, smashed up the ward. It was noisy and very stressful.
I had items stolen, nurses gave out wrong medication.
I was glad to get home, food was okay. I tried to escape reguarly it wasn't a good idea.
Be careful admitting yourself as voluntary patients can still be sectioned.
I hope you feel better very soon and stay at home.
